Read through the first book and needed to return the collection. I'll read the other ones later.

Very average and very sexist. Almost every woman's description includes why she is sexy, or why she shouldn't be seen as sexy. Unfortunately I'm the type of person who needs to know "what happens next," so I kept reading. The magic that is built in this series is intriguing, and I'd like to see more of it. I think this is a consequence of reading 6 books as one collection, but it is so hard for me to remember what happened in each one.

This was my second attempt at Jim Butcher's books, and I have to give up. It's a slog. Maybe my error was picking a six-book compilation. I don't know very many authors I could read six works by without fatigue. Maybe Stephen King, or Dean Koontz, or Neal Stephenson (big maybe, there), or Nick Harkaway (has he written six yet?) or Tom Robbins, for sure, or Christopher Moore, in a heartbeat, or Jasper Fforde, in the second heartbeat; could be Dan Simmons, I did that sometime in the last few years; Stephen Pinker, could be. Ooh, what about James Gleick, if we're going to go into non-fiction! Malcolm Gladwell, Dan Arielly might be a little bit of a stretch, Umberto Eco, ditto.

Huh. I guess it's not the number of books. I guess it's just uninspired, repetitive writing and dated characters, together with plots that just don't make the pages fly by.

Very fun and exciting. Only four stars because I can feel a slight under current of misogyny that I worry will rear its ugly head later in the series

I read the first four books in here and I really enjoyed them, but I need to take a break and read something else.

(Since this is a collection of six books, I've also rated them each individually since I liked some more than others.)

Overall: I really liked Dresden and most of the other characters, and I always enjoy the mix of contemporary and supernatural elements. Fairly formulaic stories, but the engaging narrator and vivid characters made it an enjoyable read. Probably won't be searching out the rest of the series, but if I ever run out of other books to read (doubtful, but anything's possible I guess?) I imagine I would like them just as well.

The Dresden Files is my new favourite thing! This collection of the first six books was a great value and I don’t regret it for a second!

The overall arching story doesn’t really have any payoffs in these first six books, but rather sets the rest of the series up. Yes, this is such a great series that it takes six books to really set up the world and introduce characters and factions, as well as a fantastic magical system.

I read 17 straight Dresden books and I would have never have done that of these first six books didn’t draw me into an amazing world, and most importantly the greatest main character all of Fantasy.... Harry Dresden.
