This is a 5 for the genre that it is. If you don't read pirate historical romance written after 2000 or Black historical romance, then it will probably not work for you as the tropes might feel silly or overdetermined but everyone has certain tropes that hit their buttons and part of what makes this book so good is that it understands tropes and buttons of the genre and is crafted to be a delight for the reader in love with a good pirate romance in particular.

Wow! This was my first Beverly Jenkins book and I just loved it. I saw some reviews that this isn't as strong as others so I can't wait to pick up her backlist. Love discovering a new author.

Clare Sullivan doesn't bother to dream of freedom for herself... or her children. But when a dashing pirate captures her and offers her a taste of a life that she couldn't even imagine - what will she risk to claim it as her own?

Beverly Jenkins once again rocked me. As always impeccably researched and educational and epically emotional. Clare is incredibly strong and will not be swayed from staying near her children - even though Dominic Le Veq is everything she couldn't let herself want and more. Dominic on the other hand - despite his tyrannical pirate nature - really lets everything happen at Clare's pace - from getting busy in the bedroom to making a plan to rescue her enslaved children.

I loved getting to see the Le Veq ancestor that everyone talked about in Rebel! Can't wait to read some more about this pirate family!
