I love the mixture of romance and history. I like the intense research Ms. Jenkins uses in her stories. The storyline parallels the historical events ( I like that!!). She even provides references for the reader to use for their own research. I especailly love the "black love" dipicted in her stories. All in all, once again a very enjoyable, easy, and very quick read. Classic Beverly Jenkins!!!
4.2/5 - i just wanna say that i really appreciate how this was written. it was very clear that this was during the time of slavery but not a single slur was uttered and there was zero explicit trauma. idk i feel like hollywood need to take some notes and stop feeding us torture p*rn and acting like that’s the only way to depict that time

Really hoping will get all the other LeVeq brothers books. I believe this is their grandfather's story.
Trigger Warnings: slavery, breeding, children taken away, violence, and kidnapping

It's not perfect but I gulped it down in two sittings. It was nice to read some real high-stakes conflict in a historical romance again. It does feature some of my least favorite tropes (Insta-Love, Evil Other Woman, with shades of Not Like Other Girls...) but I enjoyed the era (Colonial! High Seas! Pirates!) and thought the settings were lush and romantic (yes, the island scenes are slower but Jenkins has always excelled at writing communities and she's in form here). Also, plenty of action in the final third and a satisfying HEA. Enjoyable.

Rating: ⭐⭐⭐
Series: Le Veq Family #3
Tropes: Historical-American Revolution, Pirate, Hero rescues heroine
Content Warning: Slavery, On page sexual and physical violence
Yo ho ho and a bottle of rum! Captured introduces us to pirate/privateer Dominic Le Veq and Clare Sullivan, an enslaved woman from Savannah. Dominic is the beloved son of Antoine, a French nobleman, and Marie, his Martinique slave, who he fell in love with and freed. After Dominic rescues or kidnaps Clare (based on your point of view), he goes on a wooing campaign to convince her to stay with him. Jenkins fulfills all of your island sex romp fantasies. With the added sexyness of period-appropriate birth control and affirmative consent.
Jenkins is known for the impeccable research she puts into her books and she doesn’t disappoint with this installment of the Le Veq Family series. She creates a rich, historical world. I love Regency romances as much as any Quin and Kleypas devotee but I appreciate the change up of setting with Jenkins’ books. Sometimes the historical facts aren’t as well incorporated into the narrative but it’s always useful information. Also some wording in the love scenes could be a bit comical which took me out of the book.

The only thing that bothered me is what often bothers me about romances, namely- you're THAT SENSITIVE? In the chest area? I won't get more graphic than that but ladies, if you read this you know what I mean.
I am loving Beverly Jenkins so much! And her list of books at the end for further reading makes the historic plots even better. If you are looking for accurate, historical, romance from the perspective of people of color start reading her books immediately!

Pirates! Abduction! Poison! As action-packed as all of Ms. Bev’s books are, Dominic LeVeq and Clare go on an adventure I won’t soon forget.
The commentary on the type of lives Black people lived during the time period (widespread too, as this covers the American south, Martinique, Britain, and international waters) is vivid, and the focus on finding joy in the midst of all that is so important.
Dominic is a respectful pirate, a total hottie, and a simp for Clare. I approve 😂
