A story about birds who can see the future and rules-lawyering over a magic-based Prime Directive threshold. It shouldn’t be as good as it is.

An enjoyable read even though it is filled with (potential) deaths and threats so to speak. I read this in preparing for "Isles of the Emberdark" only to find out it is also included in the new book. I really don't mind reading it again in the new book tho - it makes me feel like I get to see the tweaks Sanderson does and also get to read the new book as a complete story - but that's the other book, not this one.
The gist: deadly islands that some people train to live on (and of), creatures that either try to kill you or protect you, flora that also tries to kill you. Usually not many people on it, but the benefit of the main island attracts people who wants to take it, by means that may destroy it.
I liked it - looking forward to reading more in the 2025 secret project book
