It was nice to have some background on this series, but it didnā€™t really deliver on showing us Adarlanā€™s Assassin, who
got into trouble and tricked every assassination we were shown
. Itā€™s the same for her first true love, whoā€™s just another enemies to lovers and
lovers for only a month off screen before heā€™s killed
.

February 2024 reread:

I loved this one just as much the second time around, and remain confident in my assertion this one should be read first. Also Sarah if you disagreed why do the acknowledgements to this one say ā€œI hope youā€™ll enjoy seeing where [Celaenaā€™s] adventures take her in Throne of Glassā€?! Hm? I rest my case.

Original review (March 2023):

Rating: 4.5/5 stars.

It took me over a decade to get to this series and it was absolutely worth the wait. A hill I will happily die on is that you need to read this one FIRST. It comes first in the box set! The promo poster literally says the journey BEGAN WITH A BLADE.

I really enjoyed these novellas. Iā€™m doing the reading order where you read Assassinā€™s Blade for the most emotional impact and PHEW. Some scenes felt like a gut punch. I really enjoyed each story and felt that they allowed me to learn more about Celeana!  But I did feel as if some of them dragged on at times, particularly ā€œthe assassin and the desert.ā€

I love this series and this book was no exception, i was anticipating a very detailed description of a character death - whilst the scene was incredibly sad, thankfully it was relatively brief. Overall a great addition to the series and a highly emotional (but worth it) read
