I think I would give this five stars, but it broke my heart a bit too much. This should be mandatory reading for all running coaches. As I prepare to send my runner girl off to college to run, I was comforted by the fact that reading this made me feel better about her coach and choice of school and not more nervous. But oooof. So much to digest in this one and so much to overcome. Fleshman made a great stride in smashing the patriarchy of the running world with this one.

Part memoir, part call-to-action, part motivational, and part science! I really enjoyed this one as a long-distance hiker even though it was running based.

Perfect book at the perfect time as I navigate being the father of a middle school female athlete. Also being pulling into coaching duty, the book offered great insights of the struggles and pressures of athletics and girls growing up in sports. Really enjoyed meshed biography and informational text. I hope to use  Lauren’s experiences to be better at being a dad to ensure my daughter has a healthy relationship with sports.

Excellent, enlightening, and heartbreaking. Optimistic that we can do better for future generations.
