insane atmosphere, but it was definitely the hardest one for me to get into. i need to improve my skills for some classics asap
I mean it's a classic but it would have been nice if something actually happened through 400+ pages.
I personally read it because "oh I'm sure it will be fun, and it's a horror story, it will be nice for spooky season. And it is a story about Dracula, he is literally in the title. He will probably be an interesting character." Well not to exaggerate but he probably talked 3 times through the whole novel. If you want to read a horror story about vampires, then this is not the best option! If you want to read a classic about dramatic people and their feelings then this is the perfect book for you.
I actually enjoyed the first half, it was much more mysterious and interesting. I was curious about how things would turn out for the characters. You don't know what they will do and what could happen to them. In the second half of the book,

more precisely after Lucy's death,The ending was just as disappointing as the second half of the book. If I went through all of those uninteresting descriptions of... well nothing, then I at least expected a better and more thrilling ending.

The characters will have to fight Dracula face to face, he is at least that much of an important character, right? But nooo. The characters waited and prepared for all that outcome??!! I mean it was the easiest way for them to kill him but it felt like it had no significance at all. Maybe the reason for his death being like this was to show that he was so strong that they had to make the most out of his weaknesses but it had the exact opposite effect. It felt pathetic and so insignificant. And the fact that Quincey Morris died also felt so unreasonable. Why? He didn't write a journal, and he talked maybe even fewer times than Dracula. He was the strongest out of them but he died? Why? Who the f cares? One more thing, that was unclear to me, was Renfield. I understood his role in the story but for me, it lacked a lot of pieces of information about him and his relationship with Dracula. However, he was probably the most interesting character to me. I couldn't wait till Dr. Seward finally wrote about him.
As much as it made the progression of the plot even slower I loved this whole diary and journal entry thing. I think the "structure" of this novel made it more exciting and maybe even more scary than if it had been told from a narrator's point of view the whole time. Even if there were 3-4 points of view they weren't about the same happenings (thank god or I would have skipped half of the book). But you can doubt them and be unsure if everything they say is true.
If I had read the first half only I would have given it 5 stars but I can't give it more than 3 stars after finishing it. Was it scary? No. Was it about vampires? Not very much, no. Is it a good dramatic classic with emotions in the centre? Undeniably. Read it if you are interested in polyamorous shit (/hj) but don't try to approach it based on other media about vampires.
