Despite the cute cover and lighthearted description, this book felt more like a mystery-drama with a pinch of romance sprinkled in. The anti-Semitism and graphic childhood abuse/trauma were heavy topics that were the focus for most of the book. Plus, I thought the idea of being attracted to a possible golem kinda odd. Ultimately, I liked the author's other 3 books more than this one.
Graphic: Child abuse, Emotional abuse, Hate crime, Panic attacks/disorders, Physical abuse, Antisemitism
Minor: Dementia

The story had a lot of holes I couldn't get past (did they really let Faye walk out of the hospital with an injured man, and didn't ask her for his name, DOB, probably SSN, and definitely his health insurance information? Really? 🤨 ) and then there were also a lot of things that were mentioned once or twice and then never mentioned again, not even to dismiss it (sending in a DNA kit. Should've heard back from them in the time Greg stayed with Faye. But whatever. ).
I'm also not a fan of -- not sure what to call it -- juvenile events? Like when the villain falls face first into a pile of poo. 🙄 I prefer to have more grown up consequences, like the villain getting what's coming. I guess it's supposed to be cute or victorious but it's just not my thing.

I love that this book is proudly Jewish and I think it explores the deep issue of right-wing antisemitism very well. I didn’t love the main characters and I think overall maybe witchy romcoms are not for me but it was a cute book.
I thought this book was good but then there was a remark about the tragedy of Oct. 7th that tipped me off. So, I looked up the author and she is a zionist so eff that.

I picked this up for the summary and wasn't disappointed from summary > experience! It was well-written and had just enough serious and lighthearted moments to be a good mix. I think it could have been a little shorter and included a couple things I didn't think it needed. It was somewhat predictable (even for chick lit) but I usually know that going into the genre. I LOVED the witchiness of the main character and the writing about her practices was so interesting!
Natalie's Book Club Pick: No, but I'm adding it! She would have appreciated the witchiness.
