I really loved the historical aspect of this book. Learning about all the buildings that were built in this era made me wish I’d read this book before visiting Istanbul. I found the main character to be likeable and interesting though not as engaging as some other characters in elif shafaks books.
The main star was the elephant chota who was a delight.
For me the main downside was the ending, it was both anticlimactic and a pointless?

Hooter: The life of the Ottomans through the eyes of an Indian kid in the 1500s as he grows up under the tutelage of the master architect Sinan.
Elif Shafak has a way with creating visual imagery whether it is 2010s or 1500s in this case. Humayun sends a white elephant along with its trainer / mahout to Ottoman empire as a gift to the Sultan. The rest of the book focuses on his experiences as he explores the culture, the people and world around him with life's ups and downs. How his enthusiasm to become an apprentice under the great SInan - the master architect who served under multiple Sultans. Though unlike her previous books, the middle gets extremely slow and seems to loiter around in splendour but not really pushing the story ahead. So if you wanted a colourful Bollywood spectacle in literary aspects with semblance of a story, this is the one.
