SpoilerI hate that old traitor, I'm glad he died

Straightforward, satisfying plot and characters - I'd discovered the novel via its Netflix adaptation, and ngl I am so glad I decided to finish the book first because from the first episode alone I am not a fan of all the changes made For The Drama:tm: - with lots of affection and care placed into describing kretek and its components. I normally LOATHE the smell of cigarette smoke and the like, but I couldn't help falling in love with the descriptions of cloves and tobacco, the sweet and fruity and savory scents and flavors of lovingly hand-rolled cigarettes - especially when Raja's sons and Dasiyah wax poetic about them. I also especially love how the different periods covered in the storyline help give context to characters' choices, for readers unfamiliar with Indonesia's history (like me). Hope I get to check out more Indonesian literature after such a beautiful novel.
