The Last Thing to Burn

Will Dean

3.92 AVERAGE

On an isolated farm somewhere in England we meet Jane and her captor Lenn. Jane is not her real name, that is what he calls her. Jane has been held against her wishes for over 7 years. She and her sister was brought here illegally. He tells her that her sister has been found and deported back to Vietnam. He has injured Jane in such a way that he knows she will not try to escape, again.

OMG, this book is filled with suspense in a mind bending sort of way. Once I started, I could not put it down.

Many thanks to Netgalley and Atria books for this advanced readers copy. This book released in April, 2021.

This book was decent. It was quite tense and suspenseful throughout, especially in the final few chapters. I listened to the audiobook, the narration was good. The plot wasn't anything super unique but enjoyable and entertaining none the less.

Equally heart breaking and suspenseful. This story grabs you from the very beginning and does not let you go. You will be addictively and intensely flipping the pages to find out if our main character will escape her captivity. It is also worth noting that this book is written so beautifully for something so evil.

If you loved 'Still Missing' by Chevy Stevens and 'The Quiet Tenant' by Clemence Michallon then you will love this one! Highly recommend.

Aside from the hard to read subject matter (I have no triggers, so that wasn't an issue), once the MC gave birth and it was compared to horrible period cramp, I was done. The entire book is based on the trauma this girl is going through. At 100 pages in to a 250 page book, I'd like more back story on how the MC got into this situation and at least TRY to get out of it. She seems to accept her fate, and that just doesn't make for an enjoyable read when the whole book is about torture.

This book follows Jane (not her name) and Leoanard, who keeps her captive on his farm. This was my first Will Dean book, and although I enjoyed his writing, i felt the beginning a bit slow, and I personally felt like i had to push myself to carry on reading. It just didn't grip me until the last third of the book.
