Harrowing read which tells the bleak and hopeless story of "Jane" - hard to read given the topic and scenes of violence and abuse. Listened on audio and I think this might be one I'd have preferred to read.
3.5 stars. Abuse. Trafficking. Kidnapping. The stuff of nightmares as a parent.
I have loved this previous authors books so when one of my facebook groups was reading this as a group read I jumped on it and soon devoured it. OMG. Now I don’t know if it’s cause I’m heavily pregnant and due any day or that I’ve grown soft but this book is dark, disturbing and descriptive. Parts had my stomach turning and I think the whole story was more real for me as it does contain childbirth and a newborn which is me anytime soon. I honestly felt for Jane throughout that poor woman. I longed for her to fight back, kill him or escape but I also understood why she didn’t. Some shocking outcomes to this story that I never expected. It was a truelly gripping, thrilling read. Hard to put down. Would highly recommmend to everyone. A well deserved five stars from me.
A horrifically tense and suffocating novel. Tight and taut writing that had me hooked with anxiety for each twist and turn the characters faced.
This was so stressful to read!!!
This is was such an especially scary premise since I know that there are many Filipino OFWs that become victims like these.
I can't wrap my head around how cruel the man in this book is.
Also, I would have wished for a longer chapter of Thanh, Kim-Ly, and Cynthia just chilling and taking their well deserved peace.

“If I ever get out of here
Thought of giving it all away…
If I ever get out of here
If we ever get out of here.” - Band on the Run
The Last Thing To Burn by Will Dean is a riveting, heartbreaking and powerful thriller with so much originality and brutally honest.
Lenn is a farmer who lives in a small, rugged farmhouse with his wife, Jane. But Lenn and Jane aren’t really married. Jane isn’t even her real name...Kept against her will, her every move monitored and terrorised when she puts a foot wrong, Jane fears she will never escape Lenn. All she knows is that what she must do is run…and that’s all I’m going to say about it.
Reading the book is an intense experience, both emotional & utterly captivating. Though an immigrant woman’s perspective, the experience is what engages & fixes the reader’s attention. This is not a book about one woman; it’s also a book about two people. The language and actions are telling you all you need to know about his upbringing, attitudes and life experience. This is such a powerful and disturbing story about human trafficking that it was difficult to read at times, and often, I had to put the book down and breathe for a moment.
The Last Thing To Burn is a heartbreaking and haunting story of survival. “Jane” (Thanh Dao) is a Vietnamese woman who (along with her sister, Kim-Ly) is brought to England with promises of work and a better life, but instead becomes a victim of human trafficking, forced to marry and serve her captor for many years. She endures unimaginable abuse and demonstrates an excruciating will to live in order to protect the ones she loves.
This was a tough read with such an important message that was beautifully written and is a sure to leave an imprint on the hearts of many.
The slow pace and repetitiveness kept this from a 5-star for me, but overall it was an excellent read.
Thank you to NetGalley and Atria Books for the advance copy!

Couldn’t put it down. Sometimes it was difficult to read purely because I was STRESSED OUT. I loved it
