Jane is a hostage, she lives on a farm with her hideous husband Lenn. Her name is not Jane it is Thanh Dao and she came to England in the back of a lorry with her sister Kim-Ly. They like many others are sold a lie of a great life and what she gets is imprisonment, brutality and abuse. This book is really difficult to read in places but oh my! I could not stop reading and I finished in one afternoon.
Lenn is really the vilest person I have ever read about and poor Thanh Dao he repeatedly punishes her as she tries again and again to escape. Something changes and Lenn has her even more under his control with his punishments and drugging her. She has a broken ankle that he caused after she tried to run away previously and she is in constant pain. He watches her every move and records her and watches it back so she has no way of escape and she has tried. He tries to break her bit by bit but she lives to find her sister and see her family in Vietnam again.
This really is a remarkable story about the human spirit and hope. Thanh uses one of my favourite books Of Mice and Men amongst other items as her comfort. Every page ramps up the tension and it will leave your nerves shattered as the book reaches its finale. A hard review to write as I would hate to spoil this book for anyone as I absolutely devoured it.
A fantastic book !

Had I been able to keep my eyes open I would have finished this book in one sitting. Though I’ve read books with a similar plot (Dear Child/Room) this book was still amazing. There was also a bit of a plot twist that I didn’t quite expect which is always great for me. 5/5

3.5 - I wish it was longer! I think I would have rated it higher if it were more fleshed out or you got more POVs.
A rather grim, quick read. Not quite sure what I thought about it to be honest but I couldn't put it down though and definitely needed to see it through to its conclusion. I suppose that's a good sign! Torn between 3 & 4 stars.
Blitzed through this in one sitting because it was v gripping and vvvvv tense. Blessed to be discovering some really cool and talented writers recently tbh. That being said it was NOT the Sunday evening vibe I was after lol. The plot was nothing groundbreaking but Dean's writing made it stand out for me.

Wow wow wow...did I say wow?
Picked this after seeing it around bookstagram a few times. The synopsis reeled me in, a story of a married couple yet the wife is held captive...interesting...I really don’t want to share much about the story line but wow what a read, I have never felt so much anger for a fictional character before and so much heartache for another!!
This is the most I’ve cried over a book, it really does hit you with the feels! Also the story is based in the North of England where I’m from and one of the characters has a solid Manchester accent, the author did brilliant on this, just the way he spoke, the sayings he said, the food he ate and his stubborn family beliefs he tried to drill in to others where all very northern like! @willrdean you did an amazing job on this, a story I’ll never forget
