Wow!! That was intense! ⁣⁣

“A woman being held captive is willing to risk everything to save herself, her unborn child, and her captor’s latest victim in this claustrophobic thriller in the tradition of Misery and Room.”⁣⁣

This synopsis sounds familiar doesn’t it? Well I guarantee you this is not something you’ve read before. After being letdown by Girl A I was ready to try another claustrophobic thriller.⁣⁣
⁣⁣
When I turned the last page my heart was pounding and I had tears running down my face. There were times when I wanted to look away but I couldn’t (triggers for violence and sexual assault). It almost felt disloyal to look away as I felt the urge to hold her hand until she could break free of this monster. I could not give up hope.⁣⁣
⁣⁣
This story captured my full attention and is one I highly recommend for weekend binge reading.⁣ What’s the last thriller you binged?⁣

It’s rare that a book makes me question if I can continue to read it due to the effect it has on me, but this one did.

Although not a long book, the subject matter and the incredible way it was written made me take pause more than a few times. I struggled to finish it purely because it ripped a part of my soul out.

As someone that loves disturbing, soul murdering and thought provoking books - I didn’t think this would have much of an effect on me but this hit a nerve for some reason.

Incredible book, one I definitely recommend to read - just be prepared. It’s excruciatingly dark.
slow-paced

Same idea as the room by Emma donaghue but not as intense.

I think ‘The Last Thing to Burn’ is an extremely important book that sees author Will Dean shine the spotlight into the darkest of evils. Human trafficking, torture, false imprisonment and deprivation of liberty are the concepts at the very heart of this compelling tale.

Told through the eyes of Thanh Dao, a young Vietnamese woman, is transported to the UK under false pretences and sold into a life of slavery through a forced marriage to Leonard. CCTVs record her every movement and punishments are meted out for any transgressions, through the systematic burning of Thanh’s remaining possessions stripping her of her true identity.

Will Dean has written a moving, compelling and suspenseful story that could sit in the thriller genre. I’m not actually sure where it sits as it is not a piece of entertainment, and hardly a book to read for enjoyment. Yet, it is destined to become a critical part of the literature that highlights this insidious crime.

This is not a leisurely read, but a convincing page turner. It’s an easy read yet it is one of the hardest books to actually read. It’s not a book to finish and put back on the shelf without some reflection about how I can contribute to putting an end to this barbaric practice.

Thank you Will Dean for deciding to write this. I can’t say I loved it but I love that you have put this topic front and centre.
dark emotional

Incredibly boring and repetitive. Even at over halfway through nothing in the protagonist’s situation had really changed. I couldn’t feel any suspense because nothing was happening. It’s certainly not a thriller. Descriptions are given over and over - does the author think his readers are idiots? Thanh Dao’s decisions about escaping/not escaping at various times didn’t make any sense.

Important subject matter, sure, but it was executed so poorly.

This fictional thriller has all the makings of sleepless nights with a gut wrenching type of horror that sticks clings in your mind because deep within your soul you know it could easily be non-fiction. The author writes in a way that completely disorients the reader as you’re pulled into the character’s mind and life. This book is a page turner in the best of worst ways. I wanted to know what was going to happen next but I was also scared to know what was coming next.

Do you want more? Try A Little Life by Hanya Vanagihara. I may be the ONLY person to pair these two books but they give me the same vibes. A Little Life could easily be the years following The Last thing to Burn.

Be forewarned both books come loaded with trigger warnings and happy reading!

*4.5 stars, actually.
I cannot believe how much i FELT while reading this.

Obviously, being held captive for years upon years is emotionally excruciating, but ME the READER was crying half the time.
The strength. the determination. the willingness to persevere. I have never read a book like this. Something that had me at the edge of my seat but also begging for something nice/normal/not awful to happen (which isn't usually my style) because this woman...oh man...and that MONSTER?!?!

and...OH GOD THE TWISTS?!?! i had about 20% left and thought you know there really is only one way this ends at this point and then BOOM! i literally felt as though i was struck by lightning. WHAT THE HELL. how the hell?? and now i'm scrambling to find more books by this author. WOW.
