I feel a little ashamed that I had not heard of Charlotte Saloman a young German artist who died in Auschwitz in 1943. Her life story as told in this book which is written in a prose/poetry style is an incredible one and desperately sad.
Born in an affluent family her father is a WW1 veteran decorated for bravery. Charlotte's mother is from a female line dogged by the tragedy of suicide and the book opens with a reflection on Charlotte's aunt also named Charlotte who killed herself years before. Charlotte's early life thus has the shadow of grief dominating the maternal family with her mother grandparents haunted by loss.
As the book moves into the 1930's the Nazi regime poses a direct threat to this Jewish family even though her father is both a hero and renowned surgeon and her step mother a famous opera singer.
As Charlotte manages to move to France to follow her maternal grandparents the threat is only briefly lessened before the Nazi's take over the whole country.
The story is told with what is obviously an obsessive eye by the writer to the extent that the authors voice is often expressed within the text through his own observations from present day but this adds to to the emotional impact as Foenkinos cannot escape how wonderful Charlotte's painting is as well as the whole tale of a young woman whose life is full of a love of life, love and art. Her passion is inescapable .
This is a book which I put down feeling incredibly sad and spending time looking at the art work on line.

“C’est toute ma vie”. Charlotte entrega uma mala para um amigo próximo, com todas as suas obras, depois de dias a fio as produzindo, retratando sua história, sentindo que sua vida estaria próxima de um fim, dizendo “aqui está toda minha vida”.
David tomou interesse na obra e na vida de uma pintora alemã e foi a fundo conhecer sua história e entender sua vida. Foi o livro que o tornou conhecido. Ele mesmo conta que após Charlotte, sua vida como escritor mudou. Concorreu e ganhou prêmios.
“Vida ou teatro?”, baseado nessa frase que é encontrada em uma das pinturas de Charlotte ele criou sua narrativa. Os relatos são tão reais, que não conseguimos distinguir a verdade da imaginação.
Aqui, ele conta a história da vida de Charlotte Salomon, uma mulher judia, que viveu no período da segunda guerra mundial e foi morta em um campo de concentração, grávida de cinco meses.
Mas o foco do livro é nos mostrar Charlotte e os acontecimentos de vida que a tornaram quem ela foi, que trouxeram a artista à vida. Muitas coisas no livro são fruto de muita pesquisa do autor, que foi para a Alemanha e todos os lugares possíveis para descobrir um pouquinho mais sobre ela, mas também, fruto de sua imaginação, que criou diálogos íntimos e imaginou os sentimentos vividos (e os escreveu de forma tão linda, poética como sempre).
A história é tocante, emotiva e triste, como todas que se passam nesse período. Mas conhecer um pouco mais de uma artista que viveu e criou tanto foi muito especial.
E minha cereja do bolo foi assistir ontem Audrey Tautou lendo o texto com tanta emoção e de forma tão poderosa que, eu só não chorei porque não tinha tempo, de tão “etonnée” que eu tava.. me arrepiei por uma hora e meia inteira - pela atriz, pela sua voz, pela sua presença, por ver a obra tomando vida na minha frente.. foi lindo.

charlotte est mon premier roman de david foenkinos. malgré une belle écriture et un sujet de livre intéressant sur la vie de la peintre charlotte salomon, je n'ai pas réussi à plonger totalement dans le récit. je tenterai tout de même de lire d'autres david foenkinos.
