meh but need to reread it some day because was in a reading slump

Blah. This book was blah. The characters were blah. The logic and plot were blah. The pacing was blah. The failed attempts at villain-creation were blah. The "drama" was blah. The romance was blah. There was no emotion, no personality, no world creation, no...anything. There was writing on every page, yet I feel as though I just finished flipping through an empty book.

The Young Elites is bland on a cracker but packaged and reviewed as Double Stuf Oreos. Now THAT'S a disappointment.

I read this one in a few hours over the last two days and I'm surprised at how much I didn't like it. I usually like dark, anti-hero characters and the fantasy genre, but Adellina annoyed me beyond reason. I tried to frame her around her trauma, which was hands down the most interesting part of the book, but she just didn't have any redeeming qualities. I think I could have gotten over it if she had been a bit more self-reflective, but in the end I just didn't connect with her.

Ok, I just realized that I didn't make a review for this book. I have a lot to say about this one!

The Young Elites is the type of book that blew your mind because the characters are so well constructed (especially one of the mains), the story line is so well depicted that you have no other option than to be blew up. To be more specific, why did I love this book so much?

Because I've never seen a female character so strong and full of resentment, hate, revenge desire. Usually we see this perfect female that the only flaws she might have are completely hidden by her perfection but no here. The imperfections and fuckep up mind and heart of Adelina are what makes the book so catching. It almost feels like you have the freedom to let all that the emotions that we more than once felt but refused to admit. Rafalle also is a character that I really loved.

Also, we can see a bit of a social critic with all the kingdom and malfettos thing, how the power can even turn you against your family. Resentment plays a huge rol in this book.

In other hand, the descriptions of everything, the metaphors, the plot of the story itsefl are so well written and C'MON, THE RETELLINGS? PLEASE? I COMPLETELY FREAKED WHEN I READ THEM!

Anyways, I gave it 10/5 because is pure gold. Don't be afraid and go read this masterpiece!

In all honesty, I thought that this book was really boring and shallow. Nothing was great about it. The writing was average. The vocabulary was simple. The sentences were disjointed. The plot was predictable. The characters were unlovable. All in all, an average book that I only finished because it was a quick and easy read.

3.5 ⭐️⭐️⭐️

Let's make something clear, I am a sucker for a fantasy novel that has superpowers, good worldbuilding aspects, and revolutions but not the cost of good characters. There was something so lifeless about some of the characters like they lacked some part of humanity that allowed me to fully connect with the characters. I read the story half invested, and half confused about WHY I should feel like the romance aspect of the book should be important.

Either from that, everything else about the book was fun.

What. A. Shame. I read the book after my brother told me he liked it and boy, did I feel quite the opposite towards this book. Adelina, as the main character is boring and just simply dumb. I could have tolerated or just misunderstood her as someone who is less educated with the outside world but then she proves me wrong for being someone who doesn't even have concrete thoughts. She accepts any piece of advice thrown at her, is easily manipulated, and is fickleminded- yet she learns to control her power after a one-on-one with her love interest? Teren seems to be the only character that was worth reading. Everything just seems so simple for Adelina. And it's not only the characters that made me gave this such a low rating. The prose? I mean, if the goal was to keep things simple I'd understand but then I had to read sentences like "I was stuck in the crowd. I got out." then I don't see the reason as to having this book over 300 pages long.

The Young Elites sucked me in within the first few pages and haunts me even days after finishing it. Each of the characters had compelling back-stories that only lended to an already stellar plot. I haven't enjoyed a fantasy book this much since first reading Tamora Pierce. What can I say? Run as fast as you can to get your hands on this book -- you'll be glad you did!

Thank you to Putnam and Edleweiss for a galley to be used for honest bookseller/ review purposes.
