3,5/5

marie lu knows how to make me happy like every single character is morally gray + complex 'villain' who really thinks everything he's doing is right + usurped prince trying to get vengeance and take back his thrown by non-morally upstanding ways + angry bitter wicked anti-heroine who is actively encouraged to use the darkness inside her to take revenge on anyone who has ever wronged her + no love triangle = A VERY HAPPY ME

[whispers] enzooooooooooooooooooooooooo

I dnf'd at page 109.

I love how this book kept getting deeper, and darker. Adelina was obviously a well progressed and driven character so I can't wait to see where this series goes from here.

v good but also dark af

The whole book was "meh" to me, until the end. I liked the fight scene a lot, but really the very last chapter is what captured me. I'm all about Maeve and her younger brother. Guess I'll have to read the second book now. Maeve had more personality and depth in one chapter than any of the other characters had in the entire book.

Prior to that, this book might have been a 2-star book for me. I didn't grow close to any of the characters. I forgot their abilities, their names, their relationships. Actually I was about 80% of the way through the book and some character got mentioned and I didn't even remember reading about them sooner. They seemed important, but I was too bored to flip back and try to see who they were.

I guess I was expecting more since I just finished the Legend series and LOVED it. This is obviously a very different series and should not be compared... but this was just so dull and I couldn't help but to wonder how I could love Legend so much and just not care about this book at all. I didn't even dislike it, I just genuinely didn't care about it and it's forgettable for me.

Good start of a series and the creation of a new world.. sorry enzo and even dante had to die...

man oh man why did i ever give up on this series it is truly thrilling we fr need more books about people succumbing to the darkness and ofc marie lu creates a gorgeous and entrancing world for it to take place in with a brilliant cast of characters but none that are quite so compelling as adelina im obsessed with her twisted mind
