The Princess Will Save You was in my July #litjoycrate box, and I was very excited to read it. While it is inspired by The Princess Bride, it is NOT a retelling. Princess Amarande finds herself thrust into political machinations when her father, the King, dies unexpectedly. In the midst of this, her best friend, Luca the stable boy, is kidnapped. She charges off to rescue him, with little time to plan. It was an interesting read. There were several twists and turns, some of which I saw coming and some that surprised me.

I was on the fence about this book for most of it, it was interesting but I wasn’t chomping at the bit to keep reading until 3am BUT THE EPILOGUE?????? I’m so glad past me was looking out for us and bought the whole series before starting it because !!!!!!!!!! Immediately starting the next one!

Can we talk about this stunning cover??

The Princess Will Save You was a great homage to Princess Bride (one of my favourite classic books) while still being its own story. While I wasn't a fan of the writing style, this was still an enjoyable read. The characters were well-rounded and interesting and I thoroughly enjoyed the witty dialogue.

The plot itself, while similar to PB kept me guessing. The desert setting was a nice break from traditional "British" landscapes, and the ever-moving caravans' concept was interesting. I want to know more about this Warlord, especially after the revelation at the end of the book.

Amaranda was a badass character who took after her father in fierceness and intelligence. Living in the shadow of both a Warrior King and the Runaway Queen, two opposing legacies, made her an interesting and complex character and I found myself rooting for her (even when she made some dumb decisions.)

Luca was such a sweet boy. I thought I wouldn't like him, but he grew on me with his utter and complete faith in his badass girlfriend. I also love the soft boy and the terrifying girl trope. It warms my heart. I’ve heard Luca gets a lot of character growth in the following books so I'm excited for that. Amarande and Luca's relationship also felt organic as they grew from childhood friends to lovers. I loved that neither of them said it aloud though they both clued into it at some point. And Luca calling her "my princess" to his captors? I swooned.

Looking forward to the next book!

DNF @ pg 108

Couldn't get into this one. It had potential but the relationship between the characters didn't build enough for me to care about them separating.

I was excited to have a fun, light read with this book and.. well.. It was definitely light...

I found the plot predictable so everything intending to be dramatic and intense kind of missed their mark. The plot mysteries and the problems that the characters encountered were so easy solved that they were quasi unrealistic. As a result, all the stakes were completely lowered and my connection to the story wavered a lot.

I found the characters to be endearing yet stale nonetheless. I love characters that embody stereotypical fantasy tropes but what was weird here was the dialogue. I recognised the effort to creates varying degrees of intimacy between the characters and sometimes it worked very well, but most of the time I just repeated to myself "no one speaks like this".

Despite what I say I did enjoy it! It was a fun, quick read that whisked me away from reality for a while and I'm thankful for this. But my lack of investment in the book as a whole proves that either I read it at the wrong time or it was just not for me...
