Highly recommended, Conroy's The Prince of Tides is part psychological investigation, part Southern gothic horror-show and part family drama. I had been meaning to read this novel for years, and when it became available on the Kindle I decided to go for it. It wasn't the masterpiece that I expected - but it was well-written and has left definate images seared into my imagination. On the whole, I was surprised by the graphic nature of the abuse and cruelty in the book. I know that Conroy himself was subjected to abuse at the hands of his father and based the father in the novel on his own...and I suppose the book exorcised some demons for the author.
All in all, I'm glad that I read the book, but I was certainly not itching to run out and pick up another Conroy novel.

I was so invested but felt like the last 75 pages were a bit of a letdown. And I couldn’t tell how we were supposed to feel about Lowenstein but I got the ick.

I am astounded. This book is one of the deepest in meanings, toughest in subjects, most well written storytellings spanning a lifetime of 40 years I have ever read. This book is absolutely beautiful. It’s tragic. It’s hard to read. It deals with almost every “construct” humans endure. Race, family trauma, misogyny/feminism, mental health, capitalism, and everything else. It’s told so well through the eyes of Tom Wingo that I wanted to scream at some pages, cry at others, and be astonished by the beauty of what we call life. Life is tragic. Life is beautiful. Life is hard. Life doesn’t make sense. We mess up, we try to make it better, we fall apart in the process. But through it all, we survive.

I was interested in a glowing ember story about a dysfunctional family in the south. I didn't sign up for this soft serve twist of Days of Our Lives and Deliverance.
The writing was interesting, Conroy played with form and enjoys a metaphor. I can see why some have called it purple, but that doesn't bother me. However, I truly cannot recommend it.

The writing was excellent, just not a timely read for me at the moment. Story line was a bit more than I could take in this season.
