I loved every minute of this book! The investigation was interesting and I loved learning more about another culture. The author highlighted many issues with how the Ojibwe community are treated, especially by the law enforcement/government. Daunis was such a great lead with so many layers. How she worked through problems and situations was so fun to read. The ending was so sad but also empowering for Daunis and extremely realistic. I cannot wait to read the second book in this series!!

Really good story. Loveable characters. Very grounded in time and place. My two complaints: 1) Slow start. Took about 10 chapters before the action kicked off. 2) Too repetitive. I felt a bit like the author was holding my hand through solving the mystery instead of trusting that I could remember what she'd already told me. Haha. Relatedly, there was too much telling and not enough showing.

Still a great book that I'll recommend to my kids when they're young adults.

I'm not sure if I was really expecting a crime drama but it was amazing. Handles heavy topics in a way that isn't traumatizing to read while still making the gravity of all known.

Amazing. This story is pretty fast-paced, a crime-mystery combined with a coming of age story and a search for identity and belonging. Main character is half white, half Ojibwe Native, has just graduated high school, about to start college. The small community she is a part of is experiencing a wave of drug addiction among the youth, and now people are dying. Main character gets caught up in an FBI investigation because she wants to help, but ends up in a situation where she is keeping secrets from everyone, and not sure who to trust. At the same time, the book is an exploration of heritage, family, faith, community, and cultural  life of the Ojibwe community of Michigan's upper peninsula.

I listened to the audio and the narration was excellent. Angeline Boulley does a great job of balancing the informational text about Ojibwe culture and the story and weaving its importance into who the characters are. It felt equal parts new adult, coming of age, family drama, mystery/thriller, and social commentary. I was engaged throughout the whole book.
