Really easy read. I really enjoyed this book. Piper has a funny but easy going attitude. It's not suspense driven if that is what you are looking for. But the end will totally shock you.

I really wanted to like this book, and in the end I did. Unfortunately, it was the "just liked" kind of like, not the enthusiastic kind.

Something about the writing style didn't quite work for me. The sentences were short, without much detail. This may be a purely personal thing, but somehow it never drew me into the world of the book.

Piper was an interesting character, at least on the surface. I never felt I really got to know her, even though I was told a lot about her, including her thoughts and plans. I did like the fledgling love interest with her friend, and hope that develops in future books.

The mystery would have drawn me in if I'd been more attached to the characters. Unfortunately, I wasn't convinced by the motive at the end-- I'd examined the character and dismissed them as a suspect because the motive didn't seem compelling enough.

I was drawn to this book due to the Wedding Cake angle. There isn't much of that world in this book, although I enjoyed what was there. Instead, I saw lots of the world inside a soap opera, which I loved! That was the best aspect of the book for me.

I haven't read Mary Jane Clark before. I'm interested in picking up one of her other books, since I'd love the same look into the TV News world as I did into the world of the soaps, and I think the writing style could work more for me with a thriller than a cozy-ish mystery.

Brief summary
Piper is an actress who is currently out of work. She moves back in with her parents and helps out at her mom's bakery. While Piper is at a charity event, a nice evening quickly turns into a crime scene. As the bodies start piling up, Piper can't help but wonder why this is happening and who is behind it all.

What I liked
I enjoyed that Piper wasn't acting like she was part of the police force and that she just let them do their job (like a lot of other cozy mysteries). Piper is an interesting character and I love that her mom owns a bakery that she helps out in. I kept thinking I knew who the killer was, but I was so wrong! I didn't see that coming.

What I didn't like
There were a lot of different POVs and sometimes it was confusing.

Brief thoughts
This is the first book I've ever read by Mary Jane Clark and I really enjoyed it. I'll definitely be continuing Piper's story.

Two and half stars....I've read several of Mary Jane Clark books that I really enjoyed. This one just didn't click for me.

A wonderful, light read...and I didn't figure out "whodunit" until it was almost revealed.

Quick, easy read.

This murder mystery was pretty engaging, but very choppy. The chapters are very short and the POVs switch almost constantly. Piper was a sweet heroine, as hard as it is to feel a connection to an incredibly sweet, beautiful actress. There’s a minimal romantic subplot that I think was just a set up for later books. I liked the setting of a soap opera set, but I didn’t love this book.
