Admittedly, Tusk Love is a book I picked up based on the cover. I mean, would you just look at how beautiful this cover is?!(The reverse dust jacket is super cute too, by the way)đđ€
Tusk Love was a very cute, cozy, quirky, and steamy read! It would be a perfect cozy Fall read as it takes place in Fessuran (which, in Exandria, is the month that marks the beginning of Autumn). Itâs in dual POV and has some tried and true tropes like grumpy/sunshine, he falls first, only one bed, along with plenty of action (think encounters with bandits and mercenaries), adventure, magic, and a lovely romance!
Guinevere is so sweet and sheltered and optimistic. Oskar is a hot half-orc who takes it upon himself to become her broody protector after he rescues her from some bandits. Theyâre an unlikely pair, but they work! Theyâre very cute together! I loved the balance of vulnerability and passion and how they simultaneously drove each other a little nuts (especially at first lol), but also deeply cared for eachother and brought out the best in eachother. đ„° They gave me Rapunzel and Flynn Rider vibes (if youâve seen Tangled)!
I adore the concept of this book. For those who donât know, Tusk Love is a book that exists within the world of Critical Role that characters can find in shops and âreadâ. In that world, itâs written by the fictional Matilda Merceria (hence that reference on the reverse dust jacket). Thea Guanzon turned that fake book into a real book that we can read! But itâs treated like a book for the people within that world so there are elements of world-building that donât really get explained because theyâd be normal to the people in the fictional world of Exandria. (For example, if you were reading a contemporary romance, you wouldnât expect the author to explain where NYC is or what a squirrel was, etc). Still, I felt like I was able to follow along with no issues despite having no experience with or prior knowledge of Critical Role/D&D. I just thought that it was such a cool concept! I think anyone could enjoy this one (especially lovers of cozy romantasy and/or monster romance), but people with knowledge of Critical Role will likely find it even more fun since theyâll catch all the references.
I listened to the audiobook for this one and it was done in an interesting combination of dual and duet narration (with Teddy Hamilton & Brittany Pressley as the narrators)âthe dialogue between the two MCs was in duet, but the rest was treated like dual since she still voiced male voices other than Oskarâs in her chapters and he voiced female characters aside from Guinevereâs in his chapters. I thought both narrators did a great job bringing the characters and their story to life!
Overall, itâs a feel-good romance thatâs equal parts sweet and steamy and full of magic, adventure, and quirky charm!

A sweet romance between two people who just want to be accepted. The world building was interesting and I hope to read a book set in this world again! The romance and fantasy balanced each other nicely throughout the book. This is one of my favorite books this year.

Felt like Jester giggling reading this. Might be a bit confusing for non CritRole fan to read, world-building-wise. Perfectly good fantasy smut otherwise.
The smut part didnât consume the book (thank Mercer) but when it was time for it, hoooo boy
