Me encantó.

I picked this up several years ago and just finished re-reading it. Short stories are a format that tend to frustrate me, so I don't read a lot of them. I was originally drawn to this title because so much praise had been heaped upon it. The problem I have with short stories is often they just don't seem to go anywhere, they are just a vignette of life, but I require more substance. Or they seem to just try too hard to end ironically or with a twist so unbelievable it cheapens the experience of reading them. Perhaps worst of all is when there is the rare one you really love, and then you want an entire book devoted to the story and not just a few dozen pages.

Lahiri's collection is beautifully written, soulful, and often tinged with wistfulness or sadness, though they don't come off being overwhelmingly melancholy. The portraits she paints are believable, each character is unique and possesses their own voice. That said, I personally can't say I find the characters memorable because the book didn't seem familiar to me at all at a second reading. I had forgotten basically all of it. Maybe that's another problem I have with short stories, by the time I start to get into a character enough, the story ends and it's on to the next one.

I am giving this three stars, though anyone curious about reading this should realize that for me, three stars on a book of short stories is actually pretty good praise.

Quietly heartbreaking, with gorgeous descriptive writing. I really dug this one.

I LOVE SHORT STORY BOOKS AND THIS WAS NO EXCEPTION!!!!!

I was able to finish this collection of short stories relatively quickly (since I had so much free time at the airport and a long flight), and I must say that I'm glad I picked this novel up during a vacation because even though it was neatly chunked into easy to mentally digest pieces, it was difficult to put down. Lahiri's story telling talent gripped me, and I felt myself tugged toward this book, despite the uncomortable cramp due to sitting so long and despite my extreme fatigue. Each short story, even if it had a "happy" ending, contained pain in it. If you want to read a book that will wrench your heart and flood you with feeling, read this book!

I really, really wanted to like this book, but all of the stories were so sad! Well except for the last one. I guess that is more like real life, but I also felt that they ended very abruptly, which i doubly did not like.

Some of the most beautifully crafted short stories I have ever read.

Lahiri is masterful, and there's a reason why she's won about every award possible for her writing. I still find myself thinking about the characters -- characters from SHORT STORIES -- long after I finished. Such an enjoyable, powerful read.

I, moram priznati, veoma drag.

Ovde ćemo čitati i o takvim sitnicama, i o nekim krupnim stvarima. Svaka nudi nešto novo i drugačije.
