Viehättävän nostalgiseen mijööseen sijoittuvat tarinat olivat sinällään arkisia, mutta niistä jokaiseen sisältyi myös syvempi taso. Jokaisella tarinalla oli oma teemansa vanhusten yksinäisyydestä avioelämän haasteisiin ja lapsettomuudesta sairauden kanssa elämiseen. Viihdyttävä pieni teos, joka herätti myös paljon ajatuksia.
Lahiri is amazing. Her writing is simple and poignant, and she captures the essence of both Indian society and the diaspora perfectly. I can see why she won the Pulitzer for this.
Best collection of short stories I've read in years by one of the few newfangled "Indian diaspora writers" I admire. (I'm Indian; relax.)

I was put off at first by the foreword. It had overemphasized the role of racial/cultural identity, displacement of migration, clashing of cultures, etc (all the hallmarks of the quintessential immigrant experience) as the point of interest of the characters, but once I started reading the first story, it became abundantly evident that the foreword misled entirely. Each story features characters with Desi identities, and while these identities dictate much of their reality, it is by no means what is irresistibly compelling about them. Each character is deeply human in their imperfections, and each of them crave an emotional understanding that is frequently unmet in their relationships. I cannot think of a more universal and quintessentially human tragedy. Would highly recommend this collection to everyone. I finished each story feeling deeply reminiscent of experiences I haven't quite experienced.
