WONDERFUL

This book did not disappoint! Oh my bless. I read it all in one go. The characters are so wonderful! I love books with shifters but they tend to have a lot of the same types of shifters. This book brought different types of shifters into the mix.

I found it a little annoying how overpowered each character is. They each have a long list of things they can do including the main girl. However they have individual personalities and I like most of them.

Whoa

I absolutely love this story. Nix is such an amazing character. And the guys. How can you not love them?

Picked this up because of the gorgeous cover and I'm not going to continue with this series as I found some of the abuse themes to be rather too much and didn't really fit with a happy uplifting romance with a HEA that I was looking for. That being said, this is a good twist on a paranormal university with good characters, interesting magic lore and a feisty heroine. I suspect it gets rather steamy later in the series and reverse harem isn't my thing, but the relationships between the characers was shaping up nicely.

I think I've overdosed on too many Reverse Harems lately where the woman is escaping an abusive past. It doesn't help that toward the end of the book there just was something rushed, fake feeling about the lust scenes and it was downright awkward? Language could be over-pronounced and the exclamation marks didn't help. ...!!! Gives it a YA vibe in the strangest moments, and trust me when I say that doesn't work for the rest of the stuff the author was going for.

There is something fake about this book and I became bored with so many of the same-old, same-old tropes being used - beyond gorgeous girl who everyone wants, the trademark characters of the men being "types" that are seen in other RH novels (sweet guy, flirty and funny guy, tech, etc.) I will admit the rabbit stuff was downright amusing though. What the men are - and the phoenix thing - deliver the best parts of the book.

With the level of abuse the girl had just been through, it wasn't realistic how much she bounced back so quickly. It was inconsistent on when and how she handled things - she'd go from withdrawn to skittish to suddenly joking, smiling and bonding. It was the Jekyll and Hyde of trauma.

I didn't mind the guys reaction since it fit into the world-building on how quick they latched on, but the instant bonding she felt seemed off. I prefer the slow burn, build-up scenarios with this stuff. When they are already start oggling each other, I don't care about them enough yet to care about that.

And another thing, a lot of POV shifts, which I mainly despise in romance novels. *shudders*

It wasn't hard to guess what she was - I mean, duh - but no one seemed to figure it out until the big reveal.

With the main character seeming so plastic and fake, overdone tropes, inconsistent age level, too instant to rushing attraction, and downright silly pursuits and stalking from family members - have to give this one a failing grade. I'll give 2 stars over 3 due to some of the humor working, the writing style isn't bad for the most part, and the fun friend team with Mel tagging along.

Tack on cheap gimmick cliffhanger hell.

Damn but the internalized misogyny was strong in this one! Some choice quotes "I was thrown off by the fact that she wasn't screeching or crying the way most girls did when they were insulted." "Plus weren't some girls afraid of carbs or some shit?" "Just because I'm a girl doesn't mean I'm a traditional girl." Like wtf??? This is a reverse harem novel so the audience is primarily girls. Why would you insult your audience??? Why would you want to teach your audience to hate themselves? Especially since that last quote was in reference to her wanting to watch Marvel movies instead of romcoms. Newsflash, the audience of this book is probably more inclined to romcoms than Marvel or else they wouldn't be reading this, they'd be reading comic books. This is a real problem in RH where in order to be "worthy" of a harem, you have to be the "cool girl" who's not like those other girls. Like what is wrong with authors?? Girls are awesome! Girls are amazing! All girls not just ones who like stereotypical male things and sneer at stereotypical female things! Otherwise the book was fine, there's no smut because the authors are using the FMC's trauma as a way to make it a slow burn but the guys were essentially all in love with her the moment they met her so there's not going to be much relationship development there. I'm not going to be reading the rest of the series.

Summary: Nix has been abused and killed by her father since she was young but she keeps healing herself and coming back to life. Finally she runs as far away as she can to go to university in Alaska where she meets shifters and realizes she's a shifter too. A harem ensues.

Not too shabby. Minimal errors, decent but predictable story line. Still cute and somehow engaging. I’ll continue on and see what book two has in store.

All right, the book itself was not bad. It was decent, maybe a solid 3-star rating. But I suppose the "abused past" trope is not really my thing.
