Captive in the Dark

I was hesitant to read this story, afraid it would be too dark of a read for me but to my surprise it wasn’t. Yes the subject matter is heavy-hearted but extremely well written. I couldn’t put this book down, I NEEDED to find out what the next chapter would bring and how their story ends. I have already purchased the next book and look forward to completing this series.

I tried really hard to not enjoy this book... But failed miserably in my attempts to not like it.It was a total 360 from what I normally read.

This book was really not what I was expecting from the description. Not very much happens throughout it and most of the story is taken up by lengthy descriptions of how the two main characters are feeling. It can easily be summed up by: Livvie is kidnapped, trained and kind of escapes. The rest of it is all what Livvie and Caleb are thinking about each other, which in both cases is not what they "should" be thinking or feeling. In theory it seems like it should be a book about Stockholm Syndrome, except it doesn't quite work because of Caleb's feelings towards Livvie. Towards the end, the way the book is written (demonising Livvie's Mother and old life) it seems like the author is trying to get you to want Livvie and Caleb to get into a relationship. This would a. be impossible and b. not be healthy for either of them.
There is no actual vanilla-type sex in this book because Caleb needs Livvie to remain a virgin for his plan to work, but there are other "intimate" moments and a lot of violence.
I'm not sure how interested I'd be in reading the sequel, especially having read the preview at the end of this book, it doesn't seem to take the route that the first book sets up. I would not recommend this book to anyone.

This book has really stuck with me. I’m quite new to dark romances, and there was something super interesting in a dark character that isn’t actually dark, but just behaving that way to keep his cover.
Even though he was literally keeping her in a dark basement and trying to break her it didn’t feel like an abuse story, and I was really routing for the romance in this book. Although maybe there’s something wrong with me and I shouldn’t be admitting to that!? Obviously it is an abuse story- but in most stories like that I want to kill the abuser, not have the female bring him over to the bright side. Maybe this book gave me Stockholm syndrome?! It was exciting, interesting and unique and I immediately bought the second book straight after. Great anti-hero, steamy sex scenes and intense plot. Really put me through my paces!

Apparently I love dark and twisted and horrific and sadistic bcuz I couldn't put this down! I was riveted. Livvie & Caleb were both broken yet whole, fragile yet strong, vulnerable yet guarded. In a word, survivors. And I want more, no I need more.
dark emotional fast-paced

Tough subject matter, but generally well-written (there's a plot! OMG, unheard of!) and with a lot less unintentional guffaws than a certain other series of erotica. I'd read the sequel.

Reread 8/26/2021- 4 stars upgraded to 5! I remember the first time I read this book I kept thinking … is this allowed? I was simultaneously fascinated, shocked and horrified by the concept and the taboo content. I felt weird giving it 5 stars back then so I only rated it 4… but after reading a lot of dark romance I’m definitely bumping this up to 5. It’s safe to say I enjoyed this more the second time around, which seems to be a theme with my rereads this year.

Also it’s free on Kindle rn!!!!

This was a book written before its time I believe (I wouldn’t know because I wasn’t there, but that’s what people say). CJ Robert’s was BRAVE for writing this story but wow she did a good job. I think knowing how this series ends made me enjoy this book more. I just think this book is iconic. Definitely a heavy book and NOT for everyone, but if you like dark romance and haven’t read this yet… maybe give it a try? Because the second book is even better!

There’s something about Livvie and Calebs relationship dynamic that is so toxic and ADDICTING. This is such a character driven book and omfg the tension between them.

3.5 I don't typically read books like this and actually sat on this book for a few years before I picked it up. It's bothersome that I'm starting to feel for Caleb a teeny tiny bit, I should hate him with every bone in my body. Reminds me of Breaking Bad and Sons of Anarchy, where you start to cheer on the bad guys.

My hope is that Livvie gets what she needs to survive. And when I say survive, I don't just mean live. I mean, I want her to become a stronger, more confident person.
