Definitely better than the first one. It’s a very painful read at times, where’s the happiness?! To quote myself, “I read for vibes, but not these vibes” 🫣

Honestly, probably a 4 star read but Luther bumps it up. He is my favorite MMC to date. My heart FEELS for him (all the emotions, no spoilers). And Taran? He’s like Ridoc but better. Loved him going to bat for Luther. Loved multiple side characters telling Diem to pull her head out of her ass. Loved her heart’s desire. But Diem overall sucks so bad. She’s not even dumb, she’s also mean. And my boy Luther doesn’t deserve that.

Penn Cole took “slow burn” as a challenge in this series. But boy did it leave for major swoon worthy quotes and moments.

I was lowkey rooting for Diem to die
in the Challenging
. She is so dumb, and being in her head is actually insufferable most of the time. I did add an extra star for Luther Corbois and Luther Corbois alone.

This was definitely an improvement on the first.

'Glow of he Everflame' is book two of four in Penn Cole's Kindred Curse Series. We start right where we left off with Diem now holding power she never imagined to be in her grasp and she is flung into life at the Palace amid the Descended. Most notably House Corbois. As she is stuck living with and learning from them and about them Diem discovers that everything isn't perfectly black and white. There is good amoung them and there is bad within the mortals. Things begin to blur causing Diem to question herself, her beliefs and her actions. What she wants most is the return of her mother and her support in navigating this new world. But instead shes left to question every connection she has.

Isn't Corbois the family name in the underworld movie series? the ones with the vampires and lycans? Side note, could not get that thought out of my head once it was in there every time the last game was brought up. I'll eventually google it.

I liked this more than the first book. There felt like there was more momentum to the storyline. Things are happening. Diem is still not annoying to me. Is she perfect, not even close, am I supporting all her decisions, heck no. But I hate reading perfect characters, it's so much more real and interesting when they mess up. Diem is making worse choices in my mind in this book, but I find I cant fault her, who would be thinking strait when your whole life is flipped upside down. Whenever she thinks shes figured something out, she then finds out different information. She pushes Luther away when Henri looks into a room and sees Luther and his cousin and says that the guy who trampled that boy, she thinks he means Luther cause Luther rode that horse, but then way later we find it wasnt him, it was his cousin. How was she supposed to know. Shes been brought up in a world that hates Descended. I myself reading this had a hard time remembering that the Descended are bad, other than the mortals starving we haven't really seen many bad actions taken by them. Yes there are some pretty shit characters, namely the uncles and actually nearly all the old heads of houses, but they come across as the regular power hungry elites and not people that are actively killing mortals. Not that oppression is okay.

The best part of this book is the found family aspect. I love that you can see Diem falling into it but then having to remind herself that shes not supposed to trust/rely or even like these people. But she slowly is. Her father's funeral really cements that she cant pick either side anymore and she needs to find a balance.

The worst part of the book are the parts from her mother's pov. I think theres no coming back for her, she can name whatever reason she thinks justifies her actions but really I don't know that anything can. She had a family that loved her so much, she had a daughter that she knew would one day be exposed. She is working with the horrible rebellion. Just the way they are describe it's hard to find anything redeeming about anyone willingly working with Vance.

I unfortunately will have to wait to get my matching paperback of book three before I can read it but once I can I will.
