I liked the shadow and bone trilogy way more than I thought I would but ruin and rising wasn’t as good as the first two books, still worth the read though!

I’m dead. How do I even start any other book after this one? This series has been incredible so far with the love triangles, the fantasy landscape, and the cast of wonderful characters, but this last book has truly ended the series with a bang.

So many twists and turns, a slightly slow start but once it picks up it is pretty much non-stop until the end. Tears were shed, books were *almost* thrown at walls, squeals were heard near-constantly while reading, and my face looked pretty much like this →

This rounded out the trilogy pretty well! The beginning in the White Cathedral and the caverns was a bit slow but it picked up speed afterward, and the last sentence devastated me. I'm also relatively anti-Malina but I will say I liked them most in this book out of all three.
I had also read Six of Crows previously, and I was so thoroughly under the impression through the entire trilogy that Alina would die in the Fold, and probably Mal with her. So what actually happened, from the amazing twist of Mal as the third amplifier to Alina's survival with her death faked and power distributed outward and lost, all hit me in a whirlwind. I feel like I'm still processing all the end events but all in all feel like it was a solid and cathartic conclusion!

3 hours 30 minutes - This was a well-written, engaging conclusion to the series. It contained good plot-twists that seem to come out of nowhere but make sense once you think about it. The characters mostly seem realistic, although there were times where I felt some improvement could be made.

In the final installment in the Grisha trilogy, Alina must gather what is left of her supporters to go up against the Darkling.

Everyone I’ve seen talking about this trilogy seemed to agree that Siege and Storm was the worst of the three books, but I honestly thought Ruin and Rising was the weakest story. Did I still blow through it in a weekend? Yes. But the ending felt like a letdown after the previous books.
I’ve seen some debate over whether or not Alina should have kept her powers in the end; and I think I fall on the side of her being able to retain at least some of them (maybe reduced?). It felt too much like Mal could never be happy with her if she remained Grisha, and that is just not a good enough reason for her to lose her power. I didn’t like their relationship much to begin with—definitely a little too close to a Katniss/Gale vibe for my liking—and while it got slightly better in this book, I never got completely on board.
I found Nikolai’s storyline the most intriguing (he’s just the best!) and I hope that we get more details about it in King of Scars.

Happy ending meter (no specific spoilers, just the vibe of the ending):
Happy enough, I guess? But a little disappointing, in my opinion.
