Head Like a Hole

Andrew Van Wey

3.75 AVERAGE

3.5 stars. Letโ€™s all take a minute and appreciate this cover please. My existing tbr practically screamed when I heard this book was on KU immediately loaded it up and dived in, but I quite happily covered my ears and flipped to page one. This wasnโ€™t 5 stars for me but I need someone to give me a slap and convince me not to invest in a physical copy for my shelf. Quickly. Okay I should probably cover the content now. I will admit that the beginning of this book didn't grab me and I almost DNF'd it.  Fortunately, because I've liked Andrew's other work and have had a few pleasant exchanges with him on Tiktok, I persevered through the beginning and got to read a fun horror story.

There are two main story lines that weave in and out in this book.  In the first, Megan Monroe is a struggling (sort-of former) college student that is trying to put the pieces of her life back together after a series of tragedies.  After some strange events, she decides to reconnect with her friends from her former high school.  Meanwhile, a fisherman has pulled what appears to be a severed head out of the water, and it is whispering some awfully naughty instructions to him.

This all results in a very creepy, supernatural-ish take on I Know What You Did Last Summer, and I enjoyed it.  What did Megan and her friends do back in high school? And why can they only sort of remember one of their friends?

This book really hits you over the head with the fact that it takes place in the NINETIES, to the point where I did chuckle at some of the many, many references, but overall I had a fun time reading the book.  The beginning does drag a bit, and there is an unfortunate animal death (luckily off "screen"), but I think it works up to a solid 4-star rating.

scrambled and not that scary - a lot of flinching away from the really gross stuff - but the ending was fun.

Okay so this book was nothing like what I expected. The book shadows a โ€œI know what you did last summerโ€ theme and one of the characters blatantly says it as well. Although the end of this book was a complete twist! Until the very end I was thinking I knew what would happen to the main characters life, but in fact I was wrong.

This book is set in modern times but when the main story is recounted itโ€™s set in the late 90โ€™s. I have also created a playlist dedicated to this book, it features all the songs mentioned in this book. (Follow me on IG my link is in my bio.) If youโ€™re not familiar with โ€œI Know What You Did Last Summerโ€ this story follows a disbanded group of friends in the fall of 1997 and what a said group of friends ended up doing a couple of years prior to make them disband.

As for the other things mentioned in this book it was a treat to get thrown back into the 90โ€™s as one of the last two books I had read was also set in the 90โ€™s and I quite enjoy that. Luckily I watched a lot of American tv and read a lot of internet things as a teen so a lot of this wasnโ€™t lost on me. Itโ€™s definitely one of those books thatโ€™s more enjoyable due to being able to recall what the characters are even mentioning. (Think of the Gilmore Girls and how theyโ€™re constantly referencing pop culture and figures of that time)

Many times I found myself thinking about what would happen next but as I had said before, I was always thrown back. The way this author ended the book makes me believe in the story told. I love how unique this book ended up being, I quickly devoured it in 2 days. Now that Iโ€™m working itโ€™s taking me a bit longer to finish books but thatโ€™s okay for me because I still get to enjoy my reading time when I can, and I find solstice in that.

If you want a mystery, thriller, and horror story thrown into 90โ€™s nostalgia then this book is for you! There are a lot of descriptions of flesh and it can get a little gory so if that bothers you then I would steer clear.
