Not bad, but not my favorite MZ book.  The ending felt a bit abrupt, I would have liked to see a bit more of their resolution as there were a lot of open threads.  The MFC also was tearing up constantly which was starting to get to me.

This is about Ruby who signed up to write to a solder overseas. Half of the book consists of letters and messages. It was okay for a while, but I don't like writing like this and got bored by it. I kept hanging in there because I like Mariana Zapata's book. It was worth it though! It's a cute slow burner, even though Ruby annoyed me a little bit with her insecurity.

I really liked the conceit of this one, but I didn’t like the heroine. Still, amusing.

Tropes/Themes:
-MF contemporary romance
-Epistolary (they start off as military pen pals)
-Friends to lovers
-Close familial relationships
-Slow burn
-Story exists in the same universe as From Lukov With Love (Ruby is Jasmine’s sister)

I’ve been putting this book off for a long time now because I didn’t want to run out of books from MZ’s backlist (long live the queen of slow burn). I’m glad I finally got to this though, because I ended up absolutely loving it. I liked watching Aaron and Ruby’s relationship slowly developed from friendship into something more. I loved their chemistry and the way that it shined through their letters/emails. A lot of reviewers said that they felt like the first half really dragged because of the emails/letters (which I can totally see why that wouldn't work for some readers), but I actually preferred the epistolary parts of the romance. Mariana Zapata always excels in creating witty banter and authentic connections, so I feel like the letters/emails really allowed this to shine. My only issue was that I didn’t love Ruby. She is probably my least favorite MZ heroine to date. I’m not one to talk, but she was constantly crying?! She felt a little immature at time and read a lot younger than she was supposed to be. Regardless, my love for Aaron more than made up for it.

Story: 4/5
Audiobook: 5/5 (narrated by Callie Dalton & Teddy Hamilton)
