Do you like epistolary romances? If yes, then this is the book for you.
Mix two strangers getting to know each other through emails, two interesting characters on their own, add Mariana Zapata's trademark slow burn romance and you get this excellent book.
I absolutely adored it. I wanted to read each and every one of Ruby and Aaron's emails, and their emotions were clear enough that you didn't need the inner monologues (although these do come in at around the 50% mark where the book moves on from the emails). Aaron might be a surprise for readers who know Zapata- he's not closed off, he's not grumpy, he's not afraid to trust. He's a lovely guy, with a great sense of humor, some family issues and serves in the military (although his psychology regarding that isn't much explored).
Ruby is a sweetheart, she's funny, she's relatable, she's another excellent, strong, intelligent heroine (as is my usual experience with Zapata).
Honestly, if you like slowburn and letter (well...emails and chats in this case) I cannot recommend this book enough!

Ruby is in her early 20s and has been writing letters and sending care packages to soldiers overseas for a while. Her latest soldier is Aaron, and the more the two communicate, the harder it is to not catch feelings.

This is a pen pals to friends to lovers, slow burn romance, and it had me laughing out loud many times. I loved the epistolary quality of the first half of the book, part emails/letters, part instant messages. I loved how we got to know both MCs like that, and we could very clearly see the evolution of their relationship while they got to know each other. The FMC was annoying at times, a bit immature and weak, but I liked her goofiness. And I adored Aaron.

And just like that, my well of Mariana Zapata books has run dry. This was the last book of hers that I hadn't read and I read it in one day, naturally, because I don't know how to savor books 99% of the time.
If I had never read another book of Zapata's before, I would probably have enjoyed this a smidge more than I did. As far as ranking it alongside her other books, I'd probably put it between Under Locke and Rhythm, Chord & Malykhin; not as much dumb, sexy fun as Under Locke, but better written and more fleshed out than Rhythm, Chord & Malykhin.
I really liked the first chunk of the book, the part that was all just emails and IM's back and forth, but all that anticipation was all paid off with a whole lot of insecurity, jealousy, and a bunch of other awkward, weird stuff, so I wasn't the biggest fan of everything past the point when Aaron was back stateside.
This was a fun, breezy read, but I know Zapata is capable of so much better than this, so I was pretty disappointed. If you want to read some Zapata, start with The Wall of Winnipeg and Me, Wait For It, or From Lukov With Love instead of this.

Mariana Zapata en sevdiğim yazarlardan biri. Yavaş yeşeren aşk hikayelerine bayılıyorum. Bu hikayeler MZ karakterleri ve üslubuyla da birleşince tadından yenmiyor(du). Ve bunlara rağmen kitabı sıkıcı buldum.
Kitap 24 bölümden oluşuyor ve 13. bölüme dek tamamen e-posta ve mesajlaşmaydı. Hatta 13. bölümde de sadece birkaç paragraf metin olduğu için 14. bölüme dek. Betimleme olmayınca, yaşantı görmeyince, karakter bu mesajı atarken ne yapıyordu ne düşünüyordu bilmeyince bağ kuramadım. Başta mektuplaşmalar güzeldi. Fakat mesajlaşmaların daha dörtte birini anca okumuşken "e bitmeyecek mi artık bu?" demeye çoktan başlamıştım. İlerledikçe diyaloglar boğdu, gereksizleşti. Yazar kendisi betimleme ve duygu aktarımıyla yönlendirme yapmadan bizim sadece konuşmalara bakarak karakterler arasında bir ilişki inşa etmemizi istemiş diye düşünüyorum. Bence bu da işin doğasına aykırı. Karakterlerin devamlı yazıştıklarını bilip her yazışmalarını okumamalıydık.
Ayrıca iki kitaptır yazara ne oldu bilmiyorum ama yellenme ve dışkı esprileri yapmanın, özellikle de bir kadının bunlarla ilgili espri yapabilmesinin komik ve havalı olduğunu düşünüp düşündürmeye çalışıyor. Bense iki kitaptır kız karakterlerinin davranış bozukluğu olduğunu düşünüyorum.
Davranış bozukluğu demişken Ruby'nin ailesi aklıma geliyor hemen. Aile içinde çok abartılı şeyler yapılıyordu ve yine bu komik hatta ailenin birbirine yakınlığından dolayıymış gibi gösterilmiş. Halbuki daha çok iletişim kuramayan ailelerin bir arada kalabilmek için yoğun çabası gibi bir şeydi.
Beklentim yüksek değildi. Bu kitap Mariana'nın çok sevilmeyen kitaplarından biri. O yüzden hayal kırıklığı olmadı. Üç verdim ama üç verip sevdiğim kitaplar var, üç verip sevmediğim kitaplar var. Üçten azını vermiyorum çünkü akış, konuyu toparlaması, başı sonu nizamı iyi. Ama zevk aldım mı, hayır. Mesela üç verip bir daha okuyabileceğim kitaplar var, Dear Aaron onlardan biri değil.

so so glad I’ve finished this book… could not get to grips with it at all, shame the book only got good bout 1 chapter away from finishing
