I thoroughly enjoyed this. A nice mix of epic fantasy, sword & sorcery, and grimdark with a really fascinating mythology that steps outside the simple bounds of good/evil to explore creation, free will, humanity, and the soul. Now that the characters are established and the worldbuilding begun I'm excited to see where the next book takes things.

SpoilerOf a certain type - ancient orders who have a secret origin in a spell that could make or break the world. Also a pessimistic initial protagonist, ended up liking the secondarily introduced protagonists more! The gods were also a bit above it all, so it felt a little removed from humanity, but I can understand that decision. Still thoroughly enjoyed it.

This is a fantastic book! I’m trying to get back into reading as a hobby again and this was the perfect choice. The story is so captivating! A warning, though: if you’re not okay with gore or body horror, this is not the book for you.

The summary presents this as a mystery, but the first third has nothing to do with the main plot besides the inciting incident and definitely nothing to support a mystery. The murderer isn't even released until about 1/3rd of the way through the book.

The pacing should be fast. The events happening should make it so. Unfortunately, it didn't feel that way.
