Too much lust at first sight. Couldn’t get into the banter.

Make it Sweet is a charming love story with a touch of heat. A heartbroken famous actress meets a grumpy former hockey star when both seek refuge in an idyllic California villa. There’s very little drama and nothing particularly remarkable about the story, but the delightful characters and the setting make it entertaining. Do not read this book if you’re hungry. All the French pastry talk sent me running to my local bakery.

Ava Erickson and Jacob Morgan turn in winning vocal performances in the audiobook.

The romance stuff was fine but what I really appreciated in this book was the exploration of how career shocks can mess with people’s sense of self-worth and identity, and the cascading effects on (different kinds of) interpersonal relationships. A really interesting twist on the hockey romance sub-genre.

Kristen Callihan’s Make It Sweet is a delicious as the food its protagonist makes. It’s a slow burn, grumpy hero, strong heroine delight that is one of my fave romance reads of 2021 thus far.

On the day when Emma’s illustrious role on a popular series is abruptly ended, she also discovers her boyfriend is cheating on her, which is salt in an open wound. When she retreats to the Rosemont estate in California, the last thing she expects is to encounter the sexy, grumpy grandson of the estate’s owner. Ex-hockey player Lucian has scars of his own, and doesn’t need anyone in his life, especially not gorgeous actresses who have already charmed his grandmother. But, like magnets, they find themselves drawn to each other. Will they be able to keep things platonic, or give in to their scorchingly hot chemistry?

There are so many things I loved about this book. First off, Lucian is just the perfect iteration of a broody hero who is secretly a teddy bear inside, which is kind of my kryptonite right now. Emma is strong and self assured, and I love the way she pushes Lucian out of his comfort zone. Their banter is witty and delightful, and their connection is pure steam. I enjoyed the fact that Callihan takes the time for them to develop a genuine friendship and connection before they take it to the next level. Add in some great cameos from Dear Enemy coupled with some fabulous secondary characters, and this book is a definite must-read.

The first half of the book was good but I got bored into the second half. I found the main characters annoying as they were both feeling sorry for themselves a lot. However I did like the supporting characters.
