So, I already adored Lucian and Emma, but holy crap in audiobook format?! Fire blazing out of my ears sexy. Currently Make it Sweet is available to read & listen in Kindle Unlimited, so scoop it up if you have a subscription.
I devoured Make it Sweet by Kristen Callihan (3.21).
An actress needing an escape after being axed from a popular TV show fights feelings for the ex-hockey player with THIGHS for days who is secretly baking her the most luscious cream filled pastries at his grandmother's estate
reviewing for Library Journal - link to come.
CW: parental death (off page), cheating (heroine breaks up with ex for cheating), discussion of dieting/weight as part of being "in Hollywood," concussion.

It’s in my top 5 books I’ve ever read. I own it in all formats and I do reread it. I originally listened to it as an audiobook and spent the entire day just sitting and listening to it.
Actress, Emma, is having a rough time. She just got fired and went home to find her boyfriend in bed with another woman. It’s time for a break. She heads to a gorgeous estate in California. It’s secluded and just the sanctuary she needs to figure out her life. There she meets the owners son, Lucian. An ex-hockey player and recluse. He can be rather charming but most of the time is just gruff. There is clearly an attraction but Emma needs to figure some stuff out. It’s best to avoid a fling.
Lucian is perfect. That is all I can say about him. I loved every part of this book. I will forever recommend this book to anyone who loves love.

Kristen Callihan is quickly becoming one of my favourite romance authors, I think. Her characters and stories are always fun and full of life - all the while, still having emotional depth allowing for a wealth growth within the story, and this was no exception. Luc and Emma's story is, at its core, about finding yourself after the carpet has been ripped out from under you. Both of their careers and love lives are simultaneously in an upheave, neither know how to move forward and turn to The Rosemont as a retreat to lick their wounds away from the prying eyes of the public and along the way, they find a mirror of themselves within each other. Their story is messy and complicated as they try to untangle themselves from their past and figure out where to go next, but at the same time very profound and sweet (pun intended). I loved their journey and Callihan's realistic portrayal of how one goes about finding themselves after their passion has been taken away from them so abruptly. The yearning in this was also top-tier shit, and exactly what I needed to wrap up my reading for the end of the month.
The only qualms I really had about the novel was that Luc's reasoning for staying away for so long in the first half seemed a little flimsy to me. Also, there was a significant overuse of affectionate pet names for my taste. And the, uh, food (or more specifically cream) kink the two of them had going on. I could have done without that tbh.
Other than that though, this story was nearly perfect and I'll be looking forward to whatever Kristen writes in the future.

Lucian has recently been forced to retire from his professional hockey career due to recurrent concussions. He is struggling to not only recover from his head injury and the loss of his career, but also from his fiancée leaving him. He hides away at his grandmothers estate and tries to find healing in his love of baking and cooking for others. Little does he know his grandmothers guest is going to be his greatest source of healing, if he’ll only open up to her.
Emma just lost her job, had to move, and found her boyfriend cheating on her in their apartment. She goes to her grandma’s friends estate to try to relax and find her inspiration again. Everyday she is fed by the estates chef delicious pastries, fresh fruit, and food that is life changing. She doesn’t know the grumpy grandson who is fixing the estate up is also the one creating mouthwatering sweets for her!

Emma and Lucian fight their chemistry and tension so hard! They try avoidance, fighting, friendship, but no matter what the chemistry between them is too strong! They both are struggling to find who they are in this new stage of life. The way Kristen writes the character development for both Lucian and Emma is done so beautifully. This book will take you on a wide range of emotions, happiness, jealousy, sadness, anger, worry, spice.
This book can be found on Kindle Unlimited, and it also has the audiobook for free! I can’t recommend this book enough! This is a perfect summer read.

I won’t lie and say this cover didn’t bring me sheer joy and entice me into reading this one. It did. It SO did.
But once I dove in, I realized that the sweetness inside matched the beauty of the outside, much like the delicate pastries, so handled with love within these chapters.
Emma & Lucian brought my spark back. It’s been a rough reading time for me lately, indecisive about what to read, not really falling in love with anything.
This changed all of that, and I am so excited.
The sweet, the heat, the burn, it was all absolute perfection here.
