The Prison Healer grips you in from the first few chapters however i believe it could've been a much shorter novel. Midway through it got so slow
the whole sickness plot was lowkey meaningless it was simply summed up to warden just trying to population control but it ended up being such a dragged out plot for no reason
super predictable that jaren was the crown prince
The very ending of the book is what made it. Usually this slow of a book puts me in a slump where i end up forgetting everything that went on but it was fairly well written and easy to follow. I hope it gets better especially after that cliff hanger.

"She played the game, having chosen long ago to sacrifice her soul in order to save her life."

Okkkk. Plot twist I didn't see coming on the last page upped this rating from 3.5 to 4 and makes me equally eager and terrified to pick up book two.

So you’re right, you don’t need me fighting your battles.” He moved a step closer, his tone husky as he finished, “But . . . if you’ll let me, I’d like to be standing beside you as you fight them.”

Story about 17 year old Kiva who has been imprisoned for the last decade. She is a survivor, havign witnessed her little brother murdered by the Royal Guards with her and her father being captured for treason. He subsequently died a year later leaving her alone to survive the brutal prison conditions. She is now the prison healer, having learned from him and when the Rebel Queen is captured, Kiva is tasked with keeping her alive, while befriending a new handsome prisoner and waiting for her family to come rescue her.

“I have a lot of dreams. A lot of nightmares, too. Only time will tell which path my life will take.”

“But things happen in life that you don’t expect, that you can’t plan for and you’re helpless to stop. Their story didn’t end as it should have. But I know for a fact that they’d live it all over again, even the ending, as long as it meant they could keep their beginning.”

4.5 ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ I enjoyed the writing, it’s not overly descriptive or full of unnecessary adjectives. The setting was easy to picture and you build a love for the characters. Just like watching a tv show. Quick read, kept my interested the whole time. Looking forward to reading the rest of the series.
