First of all this is not a love story, at least not a love story between Meggie and Ralph.
There are a lot strange Relationship in this Book, where the most problematic Relationship is the one between Ralph and Meggie. Ralph is a Narcissistic Catholic priest who almost raised a 10 year old child, had always a weird kind of love for her to later fall in Love with her. To me it sounds like grooming, an almost 30 year old Man, and a 10 year old girl. In those early years we don't get Meggies perspective, we were just told that Meggie loves Ralph, we are never in her Mind while she grows up to be aware of that, we never see her feelings develop, they are just there after a while. At the beginning she had almost no personality, simple minded borderline dumb. She got more personality after she was with Luke, and at that point I liked her more, but before that she had no character.
All weird women come to Ralph describing him strange se**ell encounters, and there is no reaction from his side, but when a 15 year old girl tells him she's got her first period, that made him all hot and red faced, come on, really?
Basically they were two times together once at the vacation island and the second time when Ralph came to Drogheda while he was on vacation, and that's it.
The issue what I have is that this kind of relationship is romanticised and that Meggie was never in love with somebody else and always obsessed with Ralph.
Also the relationship between Fee and Frank was also strange. Why was Frank always so obsessed with his own Mother. I don't get what was this relationship all about. But I liked Frank, and I am sad to see that there was no chapter for him and how his relationship with his mom, brothers and Meggie were after he came back.
Also really strange none of the 6 brothers had girlfriend's/wifes, I mean I know that there are really shy people, but that none of them had wife's is unbelievable to me.
The last part was good, still I wished we got more story between the family members, there was more story storyline for Justin than for Meggie.

I read this whilst travelling in Australia and it was uncanny how I would end up somewhere as it was mentioned in the book. I made me appreciate it more!

It was ok. I won’t rate it … I’d give it a 3 star in the description. I just couldn’t get over the whole church and can’t marry.

I read this book when it came out in 1977--part of a summer reading assignment the summer before I took Advanced Placement English. I loved it then. Recently, I thought of it again, and decided to give it another go; it holds up extremely well. It's a melodramatic story, but the characters are engaging and the story is one of those which really sticks with you. I have never read any other of McCullough's work, but maybe I ought to give some of it a go.
