I think this book was written extremely well. I rooted for Pat and Veronica through the entire thing and felt that I grasped their lives and perspectives. I really liked the book but it left me feeling sad.

"The only way to beat my crazy was by doing something even crazier. Thank you. I love you."
The writer does an amazing job balancing the heartbreak and humor while still showing the reality of mental health issues. It was entertaining and even charming in a way. It's an easy read. It's sort of a more intense version of The Perks of Being a Wallflower. I don't want to take away from the book, but I have to admit this is one of those rare occasions where I enjoyed the movie just a tad bit more. Overall a great read.
"Life is not a PG feel-good movie. Real life often ends badly."
"I don't want to stay in the bad place, where no one believes in silver linings or love or happy endings."

Graphic: Mental illness, Violence
Moderate: Emotional abuse
I’d seen the movie a long time ago so was aware of the plot before reading. I think it’s better to do the book first so you don’t know what’s going on.
I wasn't a fan of the movie - there I've said it. I couldn't connect to either one of the characters and I didn't feel any joy at watching their story unfold. But I did see the potential in this, so I figured I might as well go ahead and read the book. At least in the movie, there were some moments I could laugh, but in the book, nothing really works. I felt more connected to Pat, mainly because there are many inner monologues that help understand his psychosis better. But really all the other characters just fell flat. There was no depth to them and they didn't seem in any way like people you'd want to have in your life...So I guess I don't get the buzz around the movie or the book. I just didn't like them.

An easy, funny read, though maybe one of the rare cases where the movies tells the story better than the book. Patrick is a well drawn character who you come to sympathize with and root for, but Tiffany is less clearly depicted/understood and the ending in the novel is drawn out and reliant on a couple of unbelievable coincidences.
