The New Boy by R.L. Stine

I can still remember when I read this for the first time! I would always miss lunch a couple of times a week and save the $5. So, armed with about $10, I could go to the bookshop and grab the latest Fear Street on the weekend! I was a resourceful lass. And my, books were cheaper back in January 1994, weren't they? Anyway, I read this on a Saturday night, a horror movie on the TV in front of me, but my 14 year-old eyes only had room for the book in front of me. In it, three girls make a bet about dating hot new boy Ross. But after a date, Janie's friends start turning up dead!

The nostalgia surrounding this probably makes me rate it higher, but I still believe it's one of Stine's better Fear Street books. Everything isn't as it seems, and the plot actually bears a lot of similarities to the domestic noir thrillers we get nowadays, with a woman unsure if she can actually trust the man she digs. Stine borrowed the "I think I'm in a closet with a dead body" cliffhanger chapter ending later on in I Saw You That Night.

If I didn't have literally hundreds of books on my to-be-read pile, I'd revisit this one. It's another Fear Street book I can still remember vividly despite it being so many years since I last read it.

My second Fear Street book ever and I enjoyed this so much more than the last one. It had a slower start but by the end I was just trying to figure out what was going on along with the main character. A fun and creepy time.

So the last time I read this book, I think I was in middle school. I picked it up again after remembering how much I enjoyed this teen horror stories. It's not a bad book, and I can see why I liked it in the past, but as an adult I guess I'm used to books with a bit more to them. Even the current crop of YA books tend to have more development then the books of my teen years. I wish the author would go back and revise his old books. They're all good stories, but considering what teenagers read today, they could all be developed and made so much more then they are.

Wasn’t my favorite! Always a fan of the quick pacing, short chapters, and general nostalgia but poor Janie - girl, you really were all over the place and so much of this one was unbelievable, including that very swift resolution lol a miss for me!

I’ve always loved R.L Stein’s books. More specifically Goosebumps. The Fear Street books maybe considered a little cheesy, I didn’t want to put this book down. It left me wondering if the “killer” was really the killer. After awhile I suspected it was someone else, but the thrill and anticipation left me wanting more.

Not my favorite Fear Street book...but this was passable. Honestly better than some of the adult thrillers I've been listening to lately mostly because its significantly shorter and doesn't have time to get boring. Not something I will read again and don't think I will remember much about it in a week...but I'd recommend for younger readers looking for a thriller.
