4.5 stars. YA dystopian lit before it became a genre. King is a clear amateur here, but maybe that's why this might be his purest distillation of cruelty and compassion.

I wanted to like this so much more than I did! The story is compelling and a fast read, but leaves out so much that would help--like why does the long walk happen. And what is the Prize. Just saying it is whatever they want makes it too vague and unreachable. The end was unsatisfactory as well
