I've listened to Wind in the Willows on audiobook before, but this was my first time reading it. This edition is illustrated by Chris Dunn, who has a love and gift for painting animal characters. He's one of my favorite artists and I bought this specifically for his work. It's a gorgeous hardcover with spot illustrations in the text as well as full-page and even double-page spreads.

Grahame's prose is just as beautiful. From the opening description of Mole's abandoning his Spring Cleaning to the final, perfect conclusion and all the adventures in between, it's one of my favorite books ever.

Good book to read before bed if you have problems falling asleep. Other than that it sucks.

I now understand why I could never read this book when I was a kid. It is just not very interesting.

Weirdly enough there is no other piece of literature that makes me more sympathetic to the luddite cause than the Wind In the Willows. To me this is the quintessential origin of cozy cottage core and in the chapters you find a rich story about slowing down from the unnatural speed that we have placed on the world. Sometime you just need some sweet if not kind of problematic friends.

I’ve been in a reading slump for about two months; I pick up a book and can’t focus. I find myself reading a simple passage over and over again.

Powering through, I tried dipping my toe back into the classics. I kept it light by choosing a children’s classic. This particular choice, along with my lack of focus, made it difficult to get through.

A sweet book with many lessons to be learned about friendship and accountability, it dragged in places where the author used excessive use of flowery words to dredge up imagery of the landscape, and so forth. The chapter on the Sea Rat (Wayfarers All) was particularly brutal. I’ll probably give this book another try when I’m back to regular reading mode, but for now I’ll let it be.
