Surprisingly funny, and a wildly exciting final act

(I have come back to write a review for this a few weeks later) I really enjoyed this book. It was the perfect balance of science and adventure. I’m really enjoying H.G.Wells’ novels and can’t wait to read more. There’s something quite cosy about them and I can’t explain it.

Fifteen years ago, a student (who never said a word to me) warned me to never read this book. I should have listened. It did get better at the end and I can now claim that I read it.

Nobody stands the test of time. It’s interesting reading H.G Wells to see where the groundwork for most of the sci-fi ideas and concepts we still grapple with today originate. The consistent anti semitism is present to a fault though. I’m realizing that even allegedly progressive authors can’t shed the prejudices of their upbringing.

In my H. G. Wells era
