The Ersatz Elevator is Lemony Snicket’s sixth book in his Series of Unfortunate Events series, continuing the Baudelaire’s story. Here the children are back in a more traditional household, living in a ginormous apartment with the wet wipe of a man, Jerome and his dreadful wife, Esme. The Squalors live at 667 Dark Avenue and Esme is obsessed with what is ‘in’ and what is ‘out’ of fashion. As orphans are declared ‘in’ fashion, she eagerly agrees to become their guardian, until they’re out of fashion again. Although the Baudelaire’s start to believe they could be happy here, they’re concerned for their friends the Quagmire triplets after their capture by Count Olaf. When Olaf appears, disguised as a auctioneer hosting an auction of all ‘in’ things, the siblings know the triplets cannot be far away. They spend days climbing up and down an elevator shaft in an attempt to rescue them, even Sunny climbs up and down using only her teeth (mental), but sadly Olaf escapes with his kidnapped children once again. I think Jerome is the real villain in this novel, to scared to go against his awful wife’s wishes, to scared to push for justice for the orphans, and sadly to scared to continue looking after the Baudelaires after Esme leaves him (fair enough I’d leave him to). His abandonment is disheartening and shows just how cowardly some people can be.
During the Quagmire attempted rescue, Violet, Klaus and Sunny discover a secret tunnel, leading from the Squalor’s home to the ashy ruins of their former parents home. More secrets emerge – but mostly more questions as the siblings try to discover what the acronym V.F.D stands for.

I really really wanted to like this one but tbh, it was a total snooze.
This one was really good. I really enjoyed the guardians in this one. Jerome is like my 2nd favourite (after Uncle Monty).
This book was filled with a lot of suspense and kept me hooked the entire time. This book is also starting to introduce way more hints about what is to come in the series (confirming some of my previous suspicions).
