I have a great deal of love for the Series of Unfortunate Events. I read a number of them in Advanced Reader's Copies while working at (or shortly after leaving) Wonderland - and read them all quite quickly - so the details of the individual books have faded. I can, however, conclusively say that I love Sunny's chomping and erudite (at least in translation) babble.

In my opinion, one of the best uses of a red herring in a book. I’m pretty sure this is how I learned what a red herring was when I first read it 20+ years ago.

I never retained what “ersatz” meant though.

Egads. It is one thing to have a character in a story be the token dufus. It is yet another thing to make every single character a dufus. In this particular story, another set of poor, unfortunate orphans emerges. It is too much of a plot addition, and completely contrived. The adults in these stories are just too much, and by the end of the story I was in a state of perpetual eye-roll, wishing and wondering if a single grown-up in these stories will ever show up.
