The Ersatz Elevator

Lemony Snicket

For me, this book felt like filler. It's a transistion between the orphans just trying to get away from Olaf arc and the introduction into the search for the Quagmire triplets and the answers they hold. It felt really slow at points and at times it was easy to tune out and barely follow along. I still love all the absurdity in the books and the frustrating leads to absolutely no where. As for the guardians, Esmé irks me and Jerome disappoints me. I don't even understand how they are a couple.

And for Count Olaf’s sixth trick, smuggling kidnapped children out of the country!

Yup, for some reason the stolen Quagmire triplets are in a cage in the basement of the orphans’ new guardians’ apartment building. I guess Olaf was making a pit stop to get the Baudelaires too?

I’m happy we’re starting to break away from the monotony of the formula and the focus is shifting to getting the Quagmires back and unraveling the mystery of V.F.D. and their parents’ deaths.

My theory is that Beatrice was their mom and Count Olaf set the fire himself to get ahold of the Baudelaire fortune, which he was after even before the kids were born. Lemony Snicket is interested in telling the story because it’s the tale of his beloved Beatrice’s children and (presumably) finally putting a stop to the treachery that got her killed in the first place. Still don’t know what V.F.D. stands for though.

My Recommendation: This is the book where things really kick off. If you can make it this far I feel like it'll be worth your time! I'm proud I didn't dive right into the next book (I already have it), but it's another month away for book group :-(

My Response: There were a couple of pretty big revelations in this book that I was like WHOA. Some you could see them coming, but they were still like WTF!? I really really really really really want to read through the whole series ASAP, but I'm doing my best not to as these are the book group books for this year.

This book piqued my interest even more than the last because the Baudelaires have decided to try to take charge of their own destiny as much as three children can. They haven't quite figured it out yet, but they're working on it, but when Klaus said, "We've spent so much of our time trying to escape from Count Olaf, I can't believe we're trying to find him." (Loc. 1200), I almost whooped out lout on the airplane. I was just so happy they were finally acknowledging the idiocy of the adults around them and were going to do something about it.

My favorite of the series so far! The last three chapters kept me tuned in and on the edge of my seat. I actually feel like we're getting to the meat of the mystery (finally!) and learning more about Count Olaf's dastardly plans...

Grade: B+

I really enjoyed this one. With the whole Esmé thing as well, really interesting turn of events!

OH HELL YEAH BABY.

OH. HELL. YEAH.

I love this series - which, in case you live under a rock or have been up to this point blessed enough to have a Goodreads feed untouched by my screaming, is my favorite in the world - for so many reasons.

These reasons include:
- the characters
- the world
- the language
- the precision of the secrecy
- the mystery
- EVERYTHING, BASICALLY.

And this book is standout in all of those categories even in the realm of this series!!! Like, can you believe. Lemony Snicket really out here blessing us in ways we didn’t know we needed.

The characters introduced here are so fun, and the Baudelaires and Olaf and his troupe are at some of their respective fun peaks!!! The settings, including the city and the auction and the endless apartment and its building, are particularly AMAZING. And everything else is as always better and better, BECAUSE BASICALLY THIS SERIES JUST GETS BETTER AS IT GOES ALONG EVEN WHEN YOU DIDN’T THINK IT WAS POSSIBLE WITH VERY FEW BLIPS AT ALL.

Bottom line: I!!!! love!!!!! it!!!!!!!

I can't decide whether I'm thrilled or heartbroken that Sunny is starting to speak English words.

This book in the series was an extremely interesting read and you can tell things only get more mysterious and interesting from here. Some say this is the best book in the series and I am do not entirely disagree, this is certainly where things start to cook up.
In their most daring misadventure, the Baudelaire orphans are adopted by very, very rich people, whose penthouse apartment is located mysteriously close to the place where all their misfortune began. Even though their new home in the city is fancy, and the children are clever and charming, I'm sorry to say that still, the unlucky orphans will encounter more disaster and woe.
The book follows its themes of tragedy for the children in yet another unfortunate event in their lives, however there are certain questions that start to arise that the Baudelaire children will want answers for. Certain questions about their parents, how exactly the fire that led them to this miserable life started and how does Count Olaf tie into all this??
A brilliant book in the series that has even more of the dark humor even come to know, love and expect from Lemony Snicket by now.

The part I liked is when there where two pages that were totally black. At least it saved me from being totally depressed.
