Sent to live with new and extremely fashionable guardians, the Baudelaire orphans find an odd but not unpleasant home--but few answers to pressing questions about the fate of the kidnapped Quagmire siblings or Count Olaf's newest evil plans. The Ersatz Elevator develops the overarching plot introduced in the previous installment, but it's another long book by series standards and most of it is given to the series's tired episodic format. Violet and Klaus have had books dedicated to their personal growth and strengths; this book is Sunny's, the most absurd and least sympathetic of the siblings whose growth has no emotional resonance. It's as strong as always, with Snicket's practiced voice and Helquist's invaluable illustrations; the overarching plot is intriguing, if predictable, and the Baudelaires continue to grow as characters. But while I recommend and enjoy the series, I wanted more from The Ersatz Elevator, especially in the wake what began in The Austere Academy.
this is my absolute favourite in the series so far! the red herring joke? excellent
I'm pretty sure I read this a long time ago, but I remembered even less about it than The Austere Academy.
I think it's safe to assume they are out of relatives. The past three books haven't involved relatives, so I guess Mr. Poe can't abide by the will like he had originally intended. The double red herring was pretty clever, but I feel like the Baudelaire's should have anticipated it. It would have been too easy.

The secrets of VFD become more enticing, and the sinister plot involving Count Olaf thickens!
This is really the first major turning point in the series when we get away from the standard Olaf=bad and escaping him=good enough. Our heroes stumble upon new twists and turns concerning their parents untimely demise and the story begins to wind itself up towards a grand reveal!
There are aqueous martinis, red herrings, and more well meaning guardians that abandon the Baudelaire orphans as soon as the going gets rough.

While I admit these are getting a bit repetitive, I'm still liking it.

Es hasta ahorita el libro con más descripción que diálogos, y con más preguntas qué respuestas. Todos los libros dejan dudas, pero este te hace dudar más de las otras y te planeta todavía más.
