As a theatre kid with a literature degree, this sure did Hit. I don't know what to say about this one that hasn't been said. It hits the mark with actors and acting classes, torture of academia, drama of a semi-forced family unit, Shakespearean magnitude. Using excerpts of Shakespeare as a literary device to set the tone and shape the story was impressively clever. The audio performance was magnificent.

I was enjoying everything as it was and then the final "twist" (kinda?) absolutely wrecked me. I'm not sure how I feel about the ending specifically, but the story as an overall piece of art is wonderful.

This. Book. Has. Everything.
- unconventional structure
- a cast of insufferable theatre students constantly lobbing Shakespeare quotes at each other
- homoerotic tension that only women and villains seem to notice
- a random lake in Illinois
- gay love in main- and sun-plots
- holiday family drama in Ohio
- decadent ambiguity
- so. many. secrets.
- the thespian’s curse (it’s that thing when a thespian has to explain why being a thespian is not a choice, but a way of life to a painfully logical person and fails miserably)

I enjoyed this book but not quite as a compelling read as I thought it might be. Still though a good read.

This book is by far one of the best books I have ever read. It is officially tied for my favourite book ever (a feat untouchable in over 10 years!) I want to devour every book M. L. Rio ever writes and I hope she never stops writing.

This book is a masterpiece that had me on the edge of my seat never wanting to stop reading from start to finish.

Beautiful and tragic, moved me to tears. My best read of the year, one of my new favorites of all time.

To quote Hadestown:
“It's a sad song
It's a sad tale, it's a tragedy
It's a sad song
But we sing it anyway”
