A wonderful on-the-ground history of the political situation leading to the building of the Berlin Wall, its notorious and blood-soajed history, and it's eventual dismantling. The book features first-person accounts from civilians, native Germans, British and American military and diplomatic personnel, and international press.

This was the biggest pile of American horseshit I've ever read in my life. You can tell that this is MacGregor's first book, and it's not a very well researched one either. You know it's bad when I (simple history hobbyist) can identify reams of false information that have been thoroughly disputed elsewhere.

Terrific idea to report reflections of those who where there instead of the usual history of events. Quite poignant and moving at times.

Collection of stories from the Berlin after WW2. How the Berlin wall was made, how it was destroyed and what it was like to live between these moments in there. I like some of the stories a lot, but some was a bit boring and full of not so interesting dates, places and names and this disbalance is a cause of the lower rating.

This book turned out to be better than I thought. I'm really not into Cold War history, nor do I know much about it, specifically the East/West Germany story, but after being in Berlin a few years ago and seeing the Wall, Checkpoint Charlie, some locations where attempted wall jumpers were shot, etc, this book intrigued me. I am glad I picked it up. It was an enlightening and enjoyable read about the Wall's history, specifically centered around Checkpoint Charlie. I admit it did drag at times and I had trouble remembering the names and stories of people mentioned throughout the book, but it's a decent 4-star book.
It's also crazy to think that the the wall came down in 1991--only a few years before I was born. Berlin has been reunited together for only a little longer than I have been alive!
And this book really makes me miss Berlin!

Less a book on Checkpoint Charlie, & more a narrative of the Berlin Wall.
