Reread. Nice medieval mystery.
I think highly of this series so far. the writing is beyond capable, the characters are compelling, the historical details are interesting and immersive. I found the romances somewhat pat, although, again, the characters are quite likable.
After Shrewsbury Castle fell in 1138 during the civil war in England between King Stephen and Empress Maud, the ninety-four defenders of the Castle who were loyal to Maud were sentenced to be hanged as traitors to the crown. Brother Cadfael agreed to bury the ninety-four executed men but quickly discovered that were ninety-five bodies awaiting burial and the extra corpse was strangled not hanged. Horrified, Brother Cadfael vowed to identify the murder victim and unmask the killer. An intriguing puzzle and an excellent read.

The second was better than the first....these books are a lot of fun and not too hard to read.
The worldly Brother discovers one extra corpse in a pile of men killed during a battle and tracks down the killer after many twists and turns. Hugh Beringar appears to be a calculating, untrustworthy sort, but his true nature is revealed by the end (and apparently he returns in future books, hurrah). The nailbiting ending features a great sword fight, not quite as good as Lymond and his brother, but pretty close!

Even though I read this two years ago, the re-read was (almost) new to me. I was even cringing during the sword fight, even though I knew who the winner would be (because he appears throughout the series). There's something special about re-reading a series in order (which I'm doing now), instead of piecemeal.
