This was the right book for me at the right time. The story is vast, taking place during a war, but it still felt like a intimate character study. I got way too invested, but I just couldn't put the book down

The hype with this one is legit. Although this was a little longer than I anticipated, if you are a fan of historical fiction (specifically world war 1) & don’t mind multiple storylines (multiple Greek gods narrating about two separate couples) then this book is for you. There is no spice but it’s a young adult /new adult books in the sense of content. We follow Hazel and James , British young adults who meet thanks to to Aphrodite and fall in love - following each other towards the last year of WW 1. This was a little too insta lovey for me but cute. Aubrey and Colette are another couple - except Aubrey is black & Colette is Belgian. Berry did a great job researching & highlighting the trials + tribulations of being a Black person during the 1910’s. It wasn’t easy and even post WW 1, Berry emphasizes the struggle Aubrey & Colette faced as a inter racial couple. If you are familiar with One Thousand One Nights, that is somewhat the inspo for why Aphrodite & the Greek gods start narrating about these stories.

This is such a lovely novel. No pun intended. Beautiful emotion. Incessant hope. Lavished with love throughout the book towards friendships and relationships. Two worlds merging into one.
No swearing. No sexual content. I actually put off finishing this novel because I did not want it to end.
