Could’ve been even crazier if you ask me.

DID NOT FINISH: 68%

DNF @ 68%. I thought I would love this, but I am not connected with any of the characters whatsoever and for a horror novel, it’s so boring. 200-something pages of “should I tell her? I think I should probably tell her.”

The amorphous carnivorous monster, who lives cut off from civilization, knows therapy terms. It's casual. And unique.

This was a witty and gritty sapphic romance between a monster and monster hunter. Shesheshen is our POV character and our monster. A lot of the humor comes from her perspective of not understanding humans all too well.

I enjoyed the setup a ton and loved the slow build up! The back half got a little messier and a few things were wrapped up conveniently, but it was still really enjoyable.

What an absolutely lovely tale of falling in love, overcoming trauma, and figuring out who (and what) you are. Love the inclusion of queer characters, especially aro/ace characters. I think there were a few times I found myself jarred by modern language usage. I'm not sure it's a problem, but it feels weird reading "allosexual" and "enby" as descriptors from a shapeshifting fantasy creature.

I feel like Florence Pugh would be a perfect fit for Shesheshen if this were ever cast for a live-action. I kept reading Shesheshen's dialogue with her dry wit.

Also 10/10 on eating your girlfriend's abusive family. I always loved that friends and partners can fill a role to say "I understand your feelings about that asshole are complicated, but mine aren't. fuck them."

Devastated the eggs were not deviled. Anywho, very fun concept - what if The Thing was a sexy loving partner to only you? Very fun, loves the idea. Feels very isolated, like a Wattpad concept. Oh well, loved this.

This book made me realize the joys of the reading again. Yay, thanks! I liked the description of otherworldly beings in here that was not so human-centric. I
thought it was clever that it wasn't the "heart" that was giving Shesheshen a heartache, which I think a lot of anthropomorphic writers would've done, but it was her own egg-sac that turned into a heart-like thing inside of her.
I thought the ending was quite predictable, which in some ways is good -- It meant for me that the book was tied well-together. I wondered if
Ode was so comically evil -- almost like a devil spawn -- because the editors thought that would make readers feel ok that a child died cruelly. I would think that she, like other children, also tried to gain mother's approval, but were perhaps not so rotten on the inside.

Anyways, I especially love the queer everyday ending!
